Siphon enema: application, setting technique

Siphon enema is designed for washing the thick part of the intestine. It is used in those cases when the usual cleansing enema does not give the desired effect.

If a patient is unable to enter medication by oral means, or is contraindicated, they can be injected through the rectum. To do this, use medicinal enemas that provide both general and local effects. Local enemas, as a rule, are used for inflammatory reactions localized in the thick intestine. To enemas of local action are hypertonic and oily. Quite often in medical practice, a siphon enema is used to eliminate the inversion of the sigmoid colon.

Indications for siphon enema:

- removal from the digestive channel of products of decay, increased fermentation, pus, mucus, poisons that enter the intestines through the mouth;

- no effect from cleaning enemas or the use of laxatives;

- dynamic atonic intestinal obstruction.

Contraindications for the siphon enema include: acute inflammatory reactions in the anus, the neoplasms in the decay stage, acute colitis, hemorrhoids, intestinal and gastric bleeding.

Siphon enema: setting technique

To carry out this procedure, it is necessary to prepare a pitcher, ten to twelve liters of disinfectant solution ( sodium bicarbonate solution ) or saline solution, a sterilized tube with a length of 750 mm and a diameter of 15 mm. On the outer end of the probe is put on a funnel, containing up to half a liter of liquid. The temperature of the solution is determined by the doctor. In each individual case, it can be different.

To carry out the procedure, the patient is usually laid on the back or on the left side, under the buttocks must be placed a film or absorbent napkins. At the bed put a jug of liquid and a bucket for draining rinsing water with calories. The very setting of the enema begins when the end of the tube is inserted into the rectum. Before this, the area of the anal opening is richly lubricated with petroleum jelly, after which the end of the tube is advanced forward by 20-30 sentiments. If necessary, the position of the tube is fixed with a finger, as it can collapse in the ampoule of the rectum.

Siphon enema, or rather, its funnel should be above the patient's body in an inclined position. In the process of filling it, it rises above the body to a height of one meter. The contents of the funnel gradually enter the intestine. When the liquid level reaches the narrowing of the funnel, it is lowered over the pelvis or bucket. In this position in the funnel is clearly visible lumps of stool and gas bubbles. The contents of the funnel are poured into a bucket, and it is again filled with water.

The above procedure is repeated several times until a clean wash water without gases and callous masses is obtained. To achieve the desired result, it can take up to twelve liters of water. After all the manipulations, the siphon enema is washed and disinfected.
