The reorganization of educational institutions in the 20s of the XX century allowed the medical faculty to become an independent university. This happened in 1921. So the Kharkov Medical Institute appeared.

Another wave of transformation awaited the university in 1994. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted a resolution according to which the Kharkiv State Medical University was established on the basis of the medical institute. In the same year he was accredited for the highest - the 4th level.

Recent changes in the name of the university occurred in 2007, when he was given the status of national on the basis of the order of the President of Ukraine.
