An agreed and inconsistent definition in Russian

Members of the proposals, as is known from the school course of the Russian language, are divided into two categories: main and secondary. Unlike the main members of the sentence, which make up the grammatical basis, the secondary members may be absent. Nevertheless, their role in the language is great: without additions, circumstances and definitions, our speech would be inaccurate and inexpressive.

The definition is one of the secondary members of the sentence. Its general grammatical meaning is a sign of the subject. The questions that the definition answers are exactly the same as those of the adjective: "which?" And "whose?".

By the way, it is this similarity that makes it difficult for schoolchildren to perform syntactic analysis.

Accustomed to the fact that most often in the role of definition is an adjective, students mentally put an equal sign between them. But! As an adjective can be another member of the sentence, so the definition is expressed by different parts of speech.

To make the correct syntactic analysis, it is necessary to remember that there are two types of definitions: consistent and inconsistent.

The definition may be consistent or inconsistent depending on the type of subordinate relationship between words.

The agreed definition forms a relationship with the word being determined by the type of agreement. Simply put, both words denoting the subject and its attribute are in the same genre, case and number. The agreed definitions in the sentence are adjectives and participles in full form, participial turns, and ordinal numerals and some pronouns.

For example: Attentive (IM, plural) pedestrians (IM, pl), observing (IM, pl) rules of the road, cross the road only to green (In .p., m.r., singular) signal (Vp, m, sd) of a traffic light.

It should be noted that the separation of agreed definitions is governed by a number of rules and usually does not cause great difficulties.

The inconsistent definition is subject to the word being determined most often by the type of control and, more rarely, by the adjacency.

An inconsistent definition is a feature of an object that can be expressed in the following ways.

  • Noun and pronoun in indirect cases:

About (whose?) His novels I learned from a friend (whose?) Father.

  • Syntactically indivisible phrase:

Hugo is a writer (what?) With a capital letter.

  • A simple comparative degree of an adjective or adverb:

Reading (what?) Out loud develops the imagination.

  • The infinitive:

I had a desire (what?) To read the novel.

Since an inconsistent definition expresses a feature more specific than a coherent one, it often has an additional meaning of circumstance and addition. Such an inconsistent definition is separated optional, that is, it does not have strict rules for separating commas from two sides.

If the author puts a logical stress on the uncoordinated definition , then isolation is justified.

Also punctuation marks between definitions are necessary in case of their homogeneity, even if in one row there are definitions expressed by different parts of speech.
