Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk: the population of the city

The demographic situation in the capital of the Sakhalin region significantly distinguishes this city from the rest of the settlements of the island where Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is located. Its population demonstrates an intensive growth in recent decades, although in some years there was a small decrease in the number of inhabitants. General information

This Russian city is located in the south-east of Sakhalin Island, on the Susuya River, and is the sixth largest settlement in the Far East. The Sea of Okhotsk is located 25 km from it, and 9420 km is separated from the capital of the Russian Federation.

The area of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is about 165 thousand square kilometers. Thanks to its moderate monsoon climate, this city is often called Russian Australia. In this settlement, a number of highways are connected, which are of regional importance. In addition, the capital of the Sakhalin District is the airport and railway station.

All residential buildings in this city are built according to a specially developed technology, so they can withstand strong earthquakes up to eight balls. The authorities had to resort to such a measure, since this settlement is located in a seismic zone.

History of settlement

When in 1882 Mr. Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk was founded, his population was then only 56 people, and he was called the settlement of Vladimirovka. Over the next ten years, the numbers did not change significantly, and they were mostly Russian exiles.

At the beginning of 1905, a Japanese settlement was formed on this territory, which led to a radical change in the number of inhabitants in the city, and their national composition also changed. After the end of the Second World War, all the Japanese were deported to their homeland, and their place was taken by immigrants from other regions of the Soviet Union.

The latest censuses taking place in this city showed that the population of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk has grown significantly, if compared with other periods, and, moreover, its decline in suburbs and villages has significantly decreased. This is due to the reasons that this town is attractive to people due to the fact that it is an oblast center, and also its climate is dominated by mild climatic conditions. In addition, it has an advantageous geographical position and recently there has been an intensive development of its economy and many industries.

In addition to these nationalities, about 4% of Ukrainians, 1.55% of Tatars and 1% of Belarusians live in the city.

Education and culture

The young population of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk can receive a future profession in eight different universities located on the territory of the city. Currently, more than 8,000 students study at these schools. Young residents of the regional center receive their knowledge in thirty general schools or two evening schools.

Also in this village there are a lot of interesting places and attractions attracting a large number of tourists from other countries to admire the main cultural institutions of the region concentrated in it. Among them are the following: Local History Museum, Chekhov International Theater Center, Puppet Theater and others. In addition, the city has a wonderful park of culture and recreation, where people like to spend their leisure local residents and visitors. Near this place is another zoo, some interesting monuments and monuments dedicated to the heroes of the past.

In this city, many different kinds of cheeses, meat semi-finished products, mineral waters, confectionery, dairy products, beer, soft drinks and sausages are produced. Also here is developed a fishing industry complex, represented by 130 enterprises.

Currently, the administration of the regional capital has begun to develop a strategic plan, which will specify how Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk will develop until 2020. The population of this city, according to this document, will have the right to further participate in the selection of key decisions, as well as their successful implementation. Local authorities hope that the existence of such a strategy will make the management mechanism of their settlement more open and transparent for the Sakhaliners and will ensure the focus of attention of the administration and members of the urban community on the promising directions of development of the regional center.
