Valery Brumel ... The name of this person in the 60s of the XX century was associated with the Olympic Games, loud victories, deafening success and world records. "Space jumper", the legend of Soviet sport - at the age of 19 Valery became the idol of millions of Soviet citizens, overcoming each time new heights.

Valery Brumel: biography of the Olympic champion

How it all began? The boy, whose name will roar in the whole Soviet Union in a couple of decades, was born in the village of Razvedki (Amur Region, Tynda District) on May 14, 1942. His father worked as the head of the geological and intelligence party and discovered a large number of deposits of iron ore and coal. However, this work was not profitable, so the family of the future sportsman lived modestly. Valera in his childhood was a painful, frail child and did not stand out from the crowd of the same as he, adolescents. In a sports school a modestly dressed boy was not taken because of his small stature.

In 1954, the Brumel family moved to Voroshilovgrad (now Lugansk). On one of the lessons of physical education during the high jump Valera, to his surprise, easily overcame 120 centimeters. This circumstance surprised and pleased him at the same time. The young man had a hobby, which in the future became the business of his whole life: high jump. The starting impulse for Valeria was given by the experienced trainer of the children's sports school Shane Petr Semenovich, who examined the qualities in the boy who determined his future successes. Brumel had a year to ensure that after regular training, where the young man showed maximum diligence and perseverance, overcome the bar of 150 centimeters. At the age of 15 Valery took part in the championship of Ukraine and took 2nd place. The height he took was 1 meter 75 centimeters; 2-meter bar Brumel overcame after 2 years.

Record behind the record

After graduating from school, Valery Brumel clearly determined his intentions and entered the Moscow Institute of Physical Culture, where he joined the Olympic team of the Soviet Union. In training, much attention was paid to working with the bar, which caused the strengthening of the muscles of the legs, improving the jumping ability and increasing the level of physical fitness. In 1960 he debuted in Rome at the Olympic Games, took a height of 2 meters 16 centimeters, for which he received a silver medal. In the next three years, Valery set six world records, repeatedly becoming the best athlete of the planet. In 1964, in the Olympic Games in Tokyo, he gained another triumph, taking a height of 2 meters 18 cm. For sporting successes Brumel Valery was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.

No signs of trouble…

Athlete Valery Brumel, whose biography admires him as a strong personality, actually faced life with a huge tragedy that cut down all the successes and hopes for future victories. Later. Later. And while a young successful champion, popular with the fair sex, created a family with Svetlana Lazareva, a master of sports in rhythmic gymnastics. Young people signed up in 1963 and soon rejoiced at the birth of the charming little son. In the dreams of Valery, who showed high results in sports, was overcoming the bar at 2 meters 30 centimeters, over which the athlete worked hard. It seemed that a few steps remained to the cherished dream.

The tragic day that turned the whole life of Valery Brumel, was October 5, 1965. Having finished the next training, the athlete, heading home, along the way met a familiar motorcycle racer who offered him a lift. Rainy weather ... Turn on the Yauza Embankment ... The motorcycle lost control and crashed into the concrete fence. In this accident Valery flew out of the saddle and hit the reinforced concrete pillar with his right foot. The result - a broken leg, torn off foot, barely holding on the ligaments and tendons. The driver of "Zaporozhtsa" drove the injured to the hospital. His foot, Valery, who had not lost his self-control, was holding himself, jumping on one leg to the car.

In the struggle for life

Physicians of the Sklifosovsky Institute were diagnosed with a "double fragmentation fracture". Initially, even physicians considered the issue of amputation, but then it was decided to do the operation. Like a mosaic, the doctors collected the broken leg on the bones, without giving any guarantees. For more than three weeks, the body temperature was 39 degrees. Seven times, blood transfusion was used to avoid gangrene. There was no question of great sport; I was glad that at least I kept my leg. But the bones did not grow together for two years. The famous jumper was still moving with crutches.

Then one of the acquaintances advised me to turn to the wizard surgeon from the Kurgan, Gavriil Ilizarov, to whom Brumel went in the hope of healing. The doctor agreed to take on Valeriy's treatment and, to everyone's surprise, put him on his feet in less than 4 years. What was worth the first steps is known only to Valery himself, who, biting his lips until blood, walked from bed to TV, along the corridor from the ward and back. For three years, Brumel Valery Nikolayevich suffered more than 30 operations, shortened his leg by 5 centimeters. In this difficult time, the family broke up, Svetlana's wife left him, leaving him, a sick and frail child, a small son. Later, in 1968, the court would deprive the former wife of parental rights. Valery and little Sasha at that time had a hard time. The pension was scanty. The circle of friends attracted by the splendor of the name of the athlete, sharply narrowed and numbered no more than 15 people.

Literary path of Valery Brumel

To receive additional income Valery immersed himself in literary activity and began to write books. Perhaps he could prove himself in the sports industry, in a more sparing direction: as a coach or teacher of physical culture. But Valery's freedom-loving nature, which did not tolerate any kind of bureaucracy, chose a radically different path: the presentation of thoughts on paper. These works subsequently resulted in such books as "The Height", dedicated to Dr. Ilizarov, "Doctor Nazarov", "Reb Tribune", "Olympic Comedy". His novel "Do not change yourself" was translated into 7 languages. In 1971, the "Mosfilm" began shooting the film "The Right to Jump." In parallel Valery did not leave training, dreaming to return to the records. In March 1969, at an indoor stadium, he gathered his closest friends to show that he remained the same as before, and will be able to conquer the heights. Also has subdued!

Brumel is back ?!

Some time ago Valery dreamed of learning to walk, and now he was able, thanks to incredible efforts, to return to his favorite work. He started from a height of 1.75 meters, finished 2.05 meters. The audience unanimously jumped to their feet, hugged, shouted for joy, applauded. Everything was clear: Brumel was back! The one in whom they believed, whom they loved.

Valery began to train with increased energy and diligence. In 1970, he managed to do seemingly impossible: subdued the height of 2 meters 9 centimeters. But the victory, which was given by the efforts of great efforts and diligence, went to him at a high price: Brumel tore the Achilles tendon on the jogging pin important to the athlete, becoming an invalid of the 2nd group. Sport is in the past.

Nearby - only real friends

Later, Valery met Elena Petushkova, the daughter of the USSR Deputy Interior Minister. She was fond of equestrian sports, in which she achieved great success, becoming the Olympic champion. After the marriage ceremony, the young received a separate apartment, they had a daughter, Vlad. It would seem that everything was in abundance: live and rejoice, but the family did not take place: the couple parted.

From the woeful thoughts of the writer, who was seriously worried about divorce and a failed personal life, friends rescued: Inna Ulyanova, Yury Senkevich, Maya Plisetskaya, Vladimir Vysotsky. Brumel Valery Nikolayevich in this long time period thought a lot: in 1989 he left the party and was christened according to the Orthodox canon. The Olympic champion traveled a lot around the country with lectures, because he had the gift of a fine storyteller and easily knew how to keep the attention of the public.

The Last Love of Valeria

The last love of Valeria was Svetlana. A doctor by education, a psychiatrist by profession, she met on his way on a visit with common acquaintances. Feeling mutual sympathy, a man and a woman first walked a lot around the city, went to the movies, theaters, concerts. In 1992, a couple in which Svetlana was younger than Valeria for 16 years, registered a marriage and went on a honeymoon to Genoa, and on the 50th birthday of her husband, whom she loved madly, Svetlana presented a gift - Victor's son. Valery Brumel, photo of which you can see in the article, again felt himself in demand, felt on his shoulders responsibility for loved ones and tried to fully provide for his beloved family.

January 26, 2003 - the day in which Valery Brumel died. The cause of death is cancer, a disease that spares no one. Valery until the last day concealed the disease, because he did not want to look before his acquaintances infirm and sick.
