Thuya Western Golden Globe: description, features of cultivation

The western or any other plant for our landscapes is still not typical. The representatives of the Cypress family were brought to us from America and Asia. However, they are well adapted and have become very popular in garden design. Under the name Tuyu West, a large number of ornamental forms and varieties are united: perennial shrubs of various species, slender and tall trees. For the middle zone of Russia with frosty and snowy winters, it is recommended to use certain hybrids that do not require additional shelter. One of them is the Golden Globe, care for it is simple, and the plant itself is unpretentious.

Description of the plant

Thuya West Golden Globus is an evergreen shrub shrub of a spherical shape. The height and diameter of the crown are approximately the same - about 1 m the bark has a brown color, sometimes with a reddish tinge, with age, peeling is done in narrow strips. The needles are a bright yellow-green hue. With a continuous surface coating forms a golden ball with a saturated green inside. By autumn, the color changes to copper. Due to this feature, the plant among gardeners and landscape designers is very popular. A small yellow ball is able to revitalize the site even on the most cloudy and rainy days. Development of the plant is slow, for a year the growth is only up to 8-10 cm, and its final size in diameter (1-1.2 m) shrub reaches only 20 years of growth. A fairly winter-hardy variety, small size makes it easy to make shelter. Among the experienced gardeners and designers, the plant is known as the "yellow ball".

Location and soil

Thuja western Golden Glob to the ground is not as demanded as some of its relatives, but ideally prefers a light loamy soil, so complex fertilizers are required in the prepared planting soil. It is best to choose illuminated places, in the shade of the needles becomes sparse and pale, losing a characteristic golden hue. Dryness of air suffers badly enough. The climatic zone is defined as 5A, that is, it does not require shelter in the middle zone of Russia, as a rule, because of the small altitude, it appears entirely under the snow cover. In this case, it is necessary to prepare a frame so that heavy rainfall during melting and during the winter does not break the crown.

Planting and care

Experts recommend buying plants with a closed-type root system, that is, in containers. Such specimens are easier to tolerate transplantation and better adapt to new conditions. Before planting, be sure to carefully filter the earthen. Landing pit in size should be 1.5-2 times the size of the container. Make sure that the root neck is not submerged in the ground and remains at the soil level. The width of the pit should be larger than the pot, so that the growing roots have enough space around. The subsequent care consists in regular watering in hot and dry weather, and also sprinkling, as thuja the western Golden Glob does not like dry air. Spraying is carried out in the early morning hours or in the evening after sunset. Loosen the soil carefully, the shrubbery has a root system of a superficial appearance with several powerful rootlets extending deep into them. The best option is mulching. It will protect the roots from overheating, slow the evaporation of moisture, prevent cracking of the soil and give the near-barren space a decorative appearance. As mulch you can use dry grass, peat, crumbled bark of trees. In late autumn, it should be removed and replaced with coniferous lapnik - this step will prevent the appearance of mice.

Thuja does not require the formation of the crown as such, but for the density of the "ball" it is possible to trim the tips of the young shoots slightly in the early part of the season with sanitary trimming.

Diseases and pests

The bright and unusual thuja western Golden Glob is most often affected by bark beetle, spider mite, tuja aphid and false-tine. In recent years, it has been noticed that garden plants were much more often affected by the May crunch. For the protection of plants it is best to carry out preventive treatment in early spring with insecticides such as "Actellik", "Aktara" or "Enzhio". To prevent the appearance or treatment of fungal diseases, use fungicides "Skor", "Quadrice", "Maxim", "OxyHom", etc.

Thujia West Golden Globe: use

The low-bush shrub will be an ideal choice for small-sized gardens, where taller varieties, for example Smaragd, will clutter up space, create a shadow. Forming a small ball with a golden hue of needles, thuya contrasts with the emerald green of the lawn, along which it can be used as a tapeworm. Or create a decorative low hedge, decorate the rock garden. Tuya perfectly complements other perennial shrubs, especially with decorative foliage or unusual shape, for example, Japanese maple. Designers like to use it for contrasting landscape groups with different architectures. Separately it is worth noting the possibility of creating compositions on the balcony or loggia, terraces, as this dwarf shrub develops well in containers.
