Static and dynamic IP address

An IP address is a unique address (identifier) of a computer or other device connected to the Internet.

Any device (laptop, computer, mobile phone, dedicated server, etc.) on the Internet has its own personal IP-address. In this case, the device can have a dynamic and static IP address.

The static and dynamic IP is specified by the provider. If one user is assigned a fixed address by the provider, this is a static IP, in the event that the provider allocates an IP address to the user at the time of connection (from the list of free DHCP addresses) is a dynamic IP.

A dynamic IP address is a dynamically set address to a network device by the service provider using the host configuration protocol.

Most Internet service providers use DHCP to give IP addresses to users' devices while they are connected to the network. Because the IPv4 protocol has a small address space, the number of free addresses on the provider's network is limited. Since few ISP users connect to the Internet at the same time, a free address is given from the pool directly at the time of connection. This sequence allows you to serve the largest number of clients, unlike the real number of free addresses under the control of the provider. It can also be added that if the client disconnects from the network, its address is automatically returned to the free list and can then be assigned to another device of another client. Unlike dynamic, static IP addresses are given to a specific device (even if the device is disconnected from the network).

Without reconfiguring the computer again connected to the client's network, DHCP allows you to dynamically assign addresses. Thus, you can become an Internet user who has received a dynamic IP without even knowing it. For certain purposes, the dynamic IP address is more convenient than the static one. For example, when downloading files from a file sharing service. If you are banned from a resource, then with a dynamic address, you can reconnect to the Internet and use this resource again.

A static IP address is the automatically assigned primary device address on the network. It does not change over time and constantly identifies the device to which it was originally assigned.

Traditionally, static IP addresses are assigned to all servers on the network. This is necessary for their stable functioning. The allocation of a permanent address for the server gives confidence that when you go to this address now, tomorrow and at any time, you will also have access to the same server.

For example, if you organize permanent access from the network to your computer or run a permanent web server, you need a dedicated static IP address for this.

A large number of Internet providers offer a service for allocating a static IP-address on special paid terms. Therefore, if you need an IP address (statistical), you need to contact your Internet service provider.
