Polishing the windshield yourself

Among auto mechanics, it is customary to distinguish grinding and polishing of glasses. Polishing of the windshield is performed with the help of special polishing pastes and allows to eliminate minor defects and scratches. If the damage is serious, then grinding with an abrasive wheel with a different degree of granularity, as well as abrasive materials, comes to the rescue.

It should be understood that polishing the windshield with your own hands is a time-consuming process. For work, we need the following: a drill with a felt pad or a grinding machine, a powder for polishing glass, paper napkins, a paint tape and a polishing wheel with a special fastener type "Velcro". Also prepare polyethylene, which you can cover the car, a spray spray, a liquid for cleaning glasses and a color marker. When choosing a drill, check how it works at low speeds (up to 1700 rpm), the Bulgarian does not polish. Now we need to determine the degree of damage to the glass. We draw the fingernail across the scratch, if it does not cling, then the defect can be corrected without reducing the optical properties of the glass. Scales and debris from the impacts of stones polishing the windshield, alas, will not fix it.

The first stage is car washing. Particular attention should be paid to the workplace: napkins and felt circles should be clean, otherwise even a few grains of sand will make new scratches. We carefully check the glass and cover all the damages with a marker from the interior, the car is covered with a film. Next, we cut the polyethylene in the place where the scratches are located, and carefully cut the edges of the cut with adhesive tape. The liquid for cleaning the glass is my area of scratches and, guided by the instruction, we breed the polishing powder with water. Also pour water into the manual spray gun, and install a felt grinding wheel on a grinder or a drill .

Now go directly to polishing the windshield. On the switched off felt circle, apply a slightly obtained creamy paste and rub it on the damaged glass area (30x30 cm square). We turn on the power tool and smoothly move it at an angle of 5 °, we begin to process the glass. You can not stay in one place, otherwise there will be dents that will change the optical properties of the glass. Polishing the windshield should not occur with excessive pressure on the drill. Also, make sure that the work area is not dry. For this, a spray with water is intended. Further we pass to a new site, applying paste and on already processed area (coming on 5-7 sm). This is done in order to avoid unprocessed areas. After the polishing process, the glass is wiped with a paper towel. Check (it is better from interior), whether there were scratches and matte stains. If necessary, the procedure is repeated.
