People have learned to prosthetically and encrust the teeth 1600 years ago?

Researchers unearthed the modified remains of a 1600-year-old woman near the famous ruins of Teotihuacan near Mexico City. According to representatives of the National Institute of Anthropology and History, some of the woman's teeth appear to have adorned or replaced minerals such as pyrite, also known as "gold of fools", and serpentine.

Features of the find

Most likely, the woman was buried at some time between 350 and 400 years. ad. The skull of a woman belonging, most likely, to the upper class seems to have been intentionally elongated by compression under strong pressure. Interestingly, such types of modifications, as scientists believe, have not been practiced in the central part of the Altiplano plateau, where Teotihuacan is located. They are more often associated with the Maya, which occupied areas of southern Mexico and Central America.

A woman found in the Teotihuacan area might well have been an immigrant from the south. According to anthropologist Jorge Archer Velasco, she was about 35-40 years old when she died.

How was the dental procedure performed?

This amazing discovery was made in 2014. Velasco and his colleagues are currently studying many fascinating and amazing features of these incredible remains - such as round pyrite stones, encrusted in the two upper front teeth, as well as serpentine implants that were inserted in place of the lower incisors.

According to Velasco, insertions of "gold fools" in the front teeth were made by drilling the enamel. This technique was common among Maya, in the Peten and Belize regions.

As for the lower implants of the incisors, Velasco explains: "At the moment, we are conducting an analysis to see if this part could be fixed with some type of cement or fiber, connecting the implant with the jawbone."

What do we know about Teotihuacan?

As you know, Teotihuacan was one of the largest and noisiest cities of pre-Columbian America, but in the seventh century, for some strange reason, he was left. The city was later reopened by the Aztecs and used as a place of worship, mainly thanks to the legendary pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. It's no secret that this place is associated with a large number of human casualties.
