Martin McDonagh - the new Gogol and anti-Tarantino

Martin McDonagh is called the great playwright of our time. About him speak respectfully even the most cynical critics, he is called the author of the clever, deep and delicate, comparing with Ostrovsky, Chekhov, Albee and Beckett. Martin McDonagh (actually the pronunciation corresponds more to McDunn's version) is an English playwright of Irish descent, scriptwriter, film director, producer. Laureate of the "Oscar" ("Six-Charged") in the category "Best Short Feature Film". He is the author of seven plays and the director of two full-length films - "To lie on the bottom in Bruges" (2008) and "Seven Psychopaths" (2012).

The beginning of the creative path

Martin McDonagh was born on March 26, 1970. His father, a native Irishman, was a construction worker, his mother a cleaner. The future idol of millions was born in London, but after a while his parents will return to their historical homeland - in Galway (Ireland), and Martin and his brother preferred to stay in Britain. Having existed for some time on unemployment benefits, the future playwright Martin McDonagh took up his pen. An endless number of plays and scenarios were categorically rejected by the editors, after which a stunning success came to him. In 1997, his play "The Queen of Beauty," written a year earlier, was literally staged on Broadway literally in a week. After awarding theater awards "Tony" and Evening Standard, the author becomes world-wide popular.

Through thorns to the cinema

Despite the more than successful and rapid career of the playwright, Martin McDonagh became more and more fond of cinema. After reviewing hundreds of films, giving preference to the works of Scorsese, Lynch and Tarantino, Martin began writing screenplays that were not very successful initially. Although the plays created in the same period were accepted by the grateful audience with delight. But, having shown enviable persistence, the playwright nevertheless rushed into the confused world of the film industry.

Mr. McDonagh found his viewer

Martin McDonagh, whose filmography is currently quite impressive, in the movie managed to prove himself in different ways.

As a director and screenwriter:

  • "Full clip (Six-charged)" (2005) - the film was called one of the best in the subgenre of the black crime comedy, or "Tarantinshchina". McDonagh's individual director-script writing was recognized as unique, and his project was a combination of a heartbreaking drama with an intellectual crime comedy.
  • "To lie on the bottom in Bruges" (2008) - the debut full-length picture caused general enthusiasm. Martin McDonagh has collected in the project everything, than glorified the British cinema. Interesting characteristic characters and great actors. Black humor, which does not contradict the fact that in the end the movie turns out to be a tragedy. A famously twisted plot.
  • "Seven Psychopaths" (2012) is a celebration of postmodernism and a parody of parody, in which brutal humor in equal proportions is mixed with touching, tender and allegorical. Categorically unambiguously define the genre policy of this plague film project is extremely difficult even for the burned-out veteran film-man. Directed by Martin McDonagh, all movies are shot in this spirit, this is his author's handwriting.

As a producer, "Once Upon a Time in Ireland" (2011), "Seven Psychopaths" (2012).

A new theatrical sensation of the world

Critics unanimously named the playwright for his unique humor "the new Gogol", and for an amazing philanthropy - "anti-Tarantino." Now Martin's creations are pervasive: in America, Europe and Russia. The leading domestic theatergoers find in his plays countless allusions to the Russian reality.

The play "The Queen of Beauty", which brought Martin McDonagh world fame, is included in the repertoire of the Moscow theater "Satyricon". According to Konstantin Raikin, he chose it not accidentally, there is a domestic conflict in it, which is understandable to the domestic audience. The main character leaves a rich choice for the manifestation of creative imagination not only of the actor, but also of the director. In reincarnation there is a comic and an intriguing novelty.

On the stage of the Moscow Art Theater there is another psychological thriller from McDonagh. Directed by Cyril Serebrennikov deliberately kept the dark poetry and black humor of the play "The Man-Pillow". The narrative narrative carries the viewer into a severe totalitarian state, in which an inquiry takes place and during the course of it a testimony is knocked out of the young writer. His guilt lies in the fact that a distraught maniac embodies the stories of his short stories. The action resembles a confession.

It is to be hoped that Martin McDonagh will retain its corporate identity and unique sense of taste, will not slow down and will continue to make the public happy with their creativity.
