Beautiful churches, functioning monasteries, holy places, revered by believers - all these sights are full of Russian land. Getting into these special secluded corners, a person revives spiritually, receives a lot of positive emotions and is healed of spiritual ills. On the shore of the mighty Volga towers a real gem of architecture - the Makaryevsky Monastery. The Nizhny Novgorod region is famous for its shrines, which attract believers from all over the country.

The birth of the monastery

This temple of faith was laid in the distant 1435, the founder of it is believed to be the monk Macarius. This saint, recognized as a miracle worker and named the Unzhesky and Zheltovodsky patron, carried obedience in the Pechersk temple. The place for the founding of the monastery was chosen in a picturesque place: spreading floodplain meadows on the bank of the Volga near the Yellow Lake.

Inok Makarii, born in Nizhny Novgorod, was still a teenager enrolled in obedience to the Pechersky Monastery. After some time, he left the monastery and went to wander and cognize the world. He was looking for a special place on which to build a new temple for obedience and service to God. And such a place was found - near the Yellow Lake Macarius founded a small monastic settlement. So the first "pebble" appeared in the foundation of the future holy place - the Makaryevsky Monastery. The Nizhny Novgorod region became a haven for many monks who wanted to continue the work of the saint. And already in 1624 monk Tetyushsky revived the rightful cause of Macarius - the saint appeared to the novice in a dream and blessed him for the construction of the temple. During this period, the first wooden church was erected on the site of a modern monastery.

The fate of the shrine

The first church became a place of concentration of believers and ordinary people. Already in 1641 near the monastery founded the famous Makarevskaya fair. It was during this period that the temple began to flourish: people paid taxes and duties that went to the needs of the temple.

From 1651 to 1667 began to build the monastery premises in stone, they have reached our days. At the end of the XVII century, the grandiose erection of the monastery fortress was completed, which was to protect the monastery and fair from enemies. At this time, the monastery reaches its peak. It was called "the second Jerusalem", the church was visited by crowned people: Catherine the Great and Peter I.

Archbishop of Siberia and Tobolsk Simeon, Patriarch Nikon, Avvakum Petrov, Protopop Ivan Neronov and Stefan Vonifatev - all of them were brought up by the Makaryevsky Monastery. The Nizhny Novgorod region (photo of the surroundings can be seen in the article) has been a favorite place of pilgrims since ancient times.

Hard times

The XIX century became a real test for the monastery. In 1817, the local fair was moved to Nizhny Novgorod. And the waters of the mighty Volga have come closer to the walls of the temple, destroying the fortress. Due to the threat of complete destruction in 1868, the Makarevsky Monastery was closed. The Nizhny Novgorod region often suffered from such phenomena of nature, the river constantly changed the water level. However, in 15 years the monastery was again opened for novices and believers. Note that the second birth of the shrine was already a woman's monastery.

1927 was marked by a great tragedy for the novices - the temple was closed, the nuns were dispersed. The premises were used as an orphanage, then rented out to various organizations. During the Great Patriotic War, a hospital was placed here, and then transferred to the veterinarian technical school. These were the darkest times of destruction for the monastery: it was gradually destroyed, all valuables and unique iconostasis were plundered.

By 2005 the church was restored, all churches were re-consecrated on the territory of the monastery. In our time, the holy place is experiencing its own revival.
