Name days of Fedor: saints, dates of veneration

Before answering the question of when Feodor's name-days are, we will investigate the history of this name a little. Once a very common ancient Russian name of Fedor, and of Greek origin, is translated as "God's gift." The church and pre-revolutionary form sounds like Theodore - a two-component theophilic name, where the first part stands for "god," and the second for "gift." Immediately it must be pointed out that theophilic names consist of the name of God or the divine epithet. Such names include such things as Elijah (my God) or Gabriel (Divine Power).

Name Day of Feodor in the church calendar

After the Russian spelling reform of 1918, that is after the October Revolution, the name underwent some changes and began to be written as Fedor. Name days of Fedor are celebrated several times a year. But about this a little later.

Many theophoric names are Christian, and this means that they began to be used for the first time among Christians. But we also know that the name Theodore was known even before the rise of Christianity, for example, Theodore of Cyrene (Ancient Greek mathematician of the V-n. IV century BC). This name was worn by early Christian saints. Of these, the most famous are the holy martyrs - Theodore Tyrone and Theodore Stratilat (early 4th century).

Ancient Rus and Early Christianity

In ancient Russia, the name Theodore was among the most popular. For the name of Theodore in orthodox saints there are many days of commemoration.

In addition to early Christian and Byzantine saints, in the Orthodox tradition, several princes of Rurikovich were also ranked among the saints : Fyodor Rostislavovich Cherny (who was the grandson of Vladimir Monomakh) and his children - David and Constantine.

This name was also worn by the tsars Fedor Ioannovich, Fedor II Borisovich and Fedor III Alekseevich.

It is necessary to dwell on the lives of several saints who, with their selfless asceticism, glorified their name.

Fedor Rostislavovich Black

Fedor was born somewhere in the years 1231-1239. From the very childhood, he was a humble and pious man. After his father rested, the young man inherited a small place Mozhaisk. After a while he made him a nice and quite prosperous city, which earned him the love and respect of the population.

In 1260 he married the princess Maria Vasilevna and became prince in Yaroslavl. In this marriage, the son of Mikhail was born. The Prince, making military campaigns in 1277 on the Ossetian lands, attracted special attention and veneration of Khan Mengu-Timur. For about three years he spent in the Horde, but when he returned, his wife had suddenly died, and mother-in-law Princess Xenia - along with the boyars opposed her return, and the prince was announced his young son Mikhail. Fedor was forced to return again to the Horde and there was married to the daughter of the khan, who before that was baptized with the name Anna. She gave him the sons of David and Constantine. That veneration and respect, which he acquired in the Horde, the prince used for the benefit of Rus and the Russian Church. Over the years, spent with the khan, he built several Orthodox churches.

In 1290, when his son Mikhail died, Prince Fyodor and his family finally returned to Yaroslavl. At home, he began to zealously and intensely take care of his principality and compatriots. Saint Fedor built many churches and cathedrals.

September 18, 1299, anticipating a close end, the prince adopted the schema. September 19, he sincerely asked for forgiveness from all residents, peacefully moved to God.

On March 5, 1463, the incorrupt relics of St. Theodore and his children, David and Constantine, were purchased.

So Saint Fyodor became famous. Names of the church calendar are celebrated on September 19 (October 2) - the day of death, March 5 (18) - the relics, May 23 (June 5) - the Cathedral of the Rostov saints.

From 1989 to 2011, holy relics were kept in Yaroslavl, in Theodore Cathedral, now stored in the Assumption Cathedral.

Theodore Tyrone

It is worth mentioning one more, only the early Christian, holy Theodore. He served in Amasya of the Pontic region. Under the reign of Maximian (286-305 biennium). The Christian warrior Theodore was compelled to renounce Christ and to worship the pagan god, but he refused to do so, therefore he was subjected to monstrous tortures and was imprisoned. There he surrendered to prayer, and the Lord heard him and comforted him with a miraculous phenomenon. After a while he was tortured again, but the martyr did not renounce Christ, then he was sentenced to be burned. He surrendered without a murmur to the fire and with a prayer gave his soul to his Lord. It was around 305.

50 years later, the Emperor Julian the Apostate (361-363), wishing to abuse the Great Lent of Christians, ordered the Constantinople governor to cover the entire week of the first post with all the products sold on the market, with the blood of idol sacrifices.

At night, Archbishop Eudoxia of Constantinople in vision saw Saint Theodore himself and warned people not to buy defiled products on the market, but cooked boiled wheat with honey - kutya. Now in memory of this event, on the first Saturday of Great Lent, the feast day of St. Theodore Tiron is celebrated each year. On the eve of Friday, at the end of the prayers in prayer, a prayer service to St. Theodore is served in the church and the kutya is blessed.

Theodore Stratilat

In continuation of the most interesting topic: "Feodor: birthday, angel's day," it is also necessary to mention the martyr's death of the governor Theodore Stratilat, who lived during the reign of Lycinia in the IV century, was originally from Eucaite and was the governor of the city of Herakleia. He saved people from the serpent near the source with the help of physical and prayer power, passed all trials with dignity, did not break spiritually and did not renounce the faith in Christ. The names of Fyodor Stratilat are celebrated on February 8 (21), on June 8 (21).
