Hyperemia of the face: a natural condition or a disease?

Hyperemia of the face - this is an involuntary temporary redness of the skin on the face, resulting from the expansion of blood vessels. In most cases, hyperemia is the natural response of the body to any effect (for example, exercise, high air temperature, eating spicy food or alcohol). Other causes of redness are:

  1. Different emotional states, such as excitement, sexual arousal, embarrassment, anger. These emotions increase heart rate, thereby increasing the flow of blood to the brain.
  2. Effects of cold. Frost or strong wind cause the body to try to adjust the temperature so that the internal organs remain warm. Because of this, a person can become rosy.
  3. High blood pressure and hypertension. Clogged or narrowed blood vessels can not pump blood completely. The heart works hard, resulting in a flush of blood to the face.
  4. Hormonal changes. During pregnancy and menopause, which is often accompanied by hot flashes, there is an increase in blood flow.

Hyperemia of the face is also manifested in conditions when the body overheats (for example, with fever, heat exhaustion or thermal shock). In addition, it can be caused by allergic reactions and inflammatory conditions. With such Often hyperemia of the eye occurs. In rare cases, redness can be the cause of carcinoid syndrome - a condition where the tumor produces hormones that lead to vascular changes.

Blood vascular overflow can be active and passive. In the first case arterial hyperemia arises, when the blood flows faster than usual, which leads to an increase in hyperemic tissue in the volume and an increase in its temperature. In the second case, there is venous hyperemia, characterized by difficulty in the outflow of blood and stasis in the veins.

Redness of the face can be accompanied by other symptoms, depending on the condition that causes it. The main ones are unhealthy appearance of the skin, acne, blisters, skin itching, excessive sweating, a feeling of heat. Hyperemia may be accompanied by symptoms arising in other body systems (eg, dizziness, diarrhea, anxiety, heart palpitations). This may be the result of having another disease requiring treatment.

Hyperemia of the face should be treated depending on what causes it. So, instant reddening of the skin because of the surging emotions does not require any therapy and is a normal condition. Cope with such redness can be by fanning or washing with cold water. At the same time, if the flow of blood to the face is associated with pressure and acceleration of the heartbeat, it is necessary to take measures to reduce the heart rate and keep the blood pressure at the optimum level.

If you have hyperemia of the face, and you do not know its cause, contact a specialist for diagnosis. In rare cases, it can be a cancer syndrome, since a tumor in the gastrointestinal tract or lungs can lead to the expansion of blood vessels.
