Currant Gross: Variety Description

To date, more than 200 varieties of currant have been bred . Today we will consider such a black currant as Gross. It belongs to the early ripening varieties, thanks to the first berries obtained within a month and a half after the appearance of flowers on the bush. The fruits of the currant Gross are very large, and all, as for selection, the same size. Ten-centimeter brushes, strewn with sweet and juicy berries, will not leave indifferent even the most choosy connoisseurs. The currant bush Gross grows quite quickly and has an average density of branches with a moderate number of leaves.

Perfectly tolerates frosty winter and summer heat, which is very important for almost any region of our country. A special advantage of currant Gross is the high yield. With each bush you will collect at least four kilos of delicious berries. And thanks to a dense glossy skin, the collection process will not cause any special troubles in the form of spots from the juice of damaged fruits. Another plus of this variety, for which it is so loved, is resistance to various diseases. And this means that growing such a currant in your own area is quite a simple process.

Planting of black Gross Currant

Although planting a currant is not an easy task, there are still some peculiarities that need to be taken into account. To be sure of the purity of the variety and the quality of the acquired seedlings, apply for purchase only to trusted sellers who are trustworthy. Since this variety of currant like a small shadow, it is very convenient to plant the seedlings fairly tightly to the existing plantations. But at the same time, it is necessary to observe a distance of one and a half to two meters between the bushes, since they are rather spreading. With a smaller gap, you will be uncomfortable looking after them. A very important factor when planting currants Gross - the quality of the soil. One sapling should be allocated not less than a bucket of humus, a couple of handfuls of superphosphate fertilizer and a little ash mixed with potassium salts. Dig a hole with a diameter and depth of at least fifty centimeters and be sure to arrange a rim that will hold water in the process of watering. After planting, cut the bush into two buds.

Care of a bush of a currant

As we have already said, the cultivation of currants is unpretentious. It is enough to water and weed from the weeds in time. Do not over-fertilize the soil around the bush. It is enough to add organic fertilizer once every three years, and mineral fertilizer every year. Observing all these simple requirements, you can enjoy berries a year after planting.

Diseases and pest infestation

Despite the fact that Gross currant is resistant to diseases, there are pests that will have to be fought a little. One of the most common is the kidney mite, which manifests itself by having too large kidneys. To get rid of it, just cut and burn branches with affected kidneys, and treat the bush "Neuron" or "Akarin". The maximum damage is caused by the most common aphids, which are spread by ants. To get rid of it, remove all the ants by pouring the anthill with boiling water. It will be more difficult to get rid of the fire, which in the form of a pupa can easily overwinter under a bush. Every fall, dig thoroughly the ground under the currant and spray it with tincture of makhorka before flowering.
