Bypass in the heating system. Bypass on the battery: photo

During the operation of heating systems, there is often a need to install a circulation pump. As a result of this improvement, a bypass in the heating system is installed in parallel with the pump circuit. Before you put it, you need to know why you need a bypass in the heating system. In addition, this device can be used for repair work.

Bypass and its functions

A pipeline with a shut-off valve or a parallel loop that connects to the output and input of a pump, radiator or other device in the system is called a bypass pipe or bypass. In general, the bypass in the heating system is bypassing the working element. In the process of its work in the radiator the coolant will cease to flow, as it will flow past it.

Typically, the bypass is used to regulate the heat supply in various rooms. When combined with a temperature sensor, it will operate at the right time. In the case of radiator replacement, the heating system is connected to the boiler or any other source of hot water through the bypass.

Characteristics

By installing the bypass in the heating system, it is important to adhere to certain parameters. For example, the throughput should be no less than the pipeline at the entrance. In other words, it is inadmissible to reduce the diameter. But this is only if there is no tap on the bypass itself.

It is important that the installed cranes are of the same type, for example, ball valves. Depending on the installation site, the bypass can operate in different modes. The constant mode is controlled by thermostats. In addition, it can only function when the heating system is started to ensure a quick warm-up of the radiators.

Varieties

Depending on the heating system in which it is planned to use a bypass pipe, there are several types:

  • Check valve, bypass. A similar circuit is used for circulating pumps and periodically functions when required. After starting the pump from excess pressure, the valve opens and passes the coolant. If the pump is switched off, the valve closes automatically. Here the main thing is to remember that the valve can fail because of the ingress of rust or scale in it.
  • Bypass without valve. Thanks to such a device it is possible to carry out repairs on the site without switching off the heating system. In addition, the bypass will allow you to connect to the heating system in a room where there were no radiators.

Installation

As it was said above, when installing the bypass it is necessary to comply with certain requirements. The diameter of the bypass pipe must be slightly smaller than the size of the supply and return piping. As a result, the flow of water according to the laws of hydraulics will go along the path of least resistance, bypassing the heating device. Install the bypass in the heating system as close to the heater as possible and at the maximum possible distance from the riser.

With tools and some skills, the bypass can be assembled alone or simply purchased at a specialized store already ready. When installing the bypass, it is allowed to replace the ball valves with more convenient thermostats so that the temperature control is carried out automatically. To achieve maximum effect, in the middle of the bypass should be cut in the classic ball valve.

Bypass for single-pipe system

In the heating system, the bypass is a common jumper used to regulate the coolant flow. The maximum relevance it gets with a single-pipe heating system, where it smooths out all the shortcomings. Structurally, the bypass circuit is a pipe connection (jumper) communicating a supply pipe with hot water that enters the heater, with a line coming out of the radiator (return line).

Ball valves are placed on the supply line to the radiator, on the line of its exit from the heater, and also on the bypass line. Cranes are necessary for a possible disconnection of the radiator in the event of repair or other work on it, without stopping the operation of the heating system, which at this time passes to work through the bypass on the battery, bypassing the device itself.

Bypass on the line of the network pump

The use of a bypass in the heating system on the line of the network circulation pump allows the entire system to operate both with forced circulation of the heat carrier and with natural circulation, for example, in the event of an emergency shutdown in the house of electricity.

If a bypass for the circulation pump is provided on the heating system, as a rule, a special check valve can be installed in the main line of the system parallel to the pump instead of the ball valve. Its normal state is open, in case of an emergency power outage, it immediately closes, thus, the operation of the heating system switches to natural circulation.

Bypass near the boiler

In this case, the bypass is installed next to the boiler - directly on the return pipe of the heating system. Install it should be in place with the lowest temperature in the system. Such an arrangement of the return pipeline does not allow the radiator, bypass, the network circulation pump to overheat, and also prevents the possible formation of an airlock. Structurally, this bypass is installed on a horizontal plane, while its diameter should correspond to the diameter of the return pipeline.

Automatic bypass

Bypasses of this type are activated in the event of a failure of the heating system, without human intervention. For example, if the network circulation pump stops functioning, in the event of a sudden power outage, the shut-off devices located on the bypass shut off, the pipeline valve opens, which is located between the outlet and the inlet pipes.

As a result, the coolant starts to move along the main line, and the heating system switches to the natural circulation of the liquid. Naturally, in such a situation it is preferable to use an automatic bypass for the circulation pump.

Bypass Diameter

If a bypass of the same diameter as the pipelines of the main line is used to connect the heater, the coolant will flow into it with a low intensity. In this connection, a smaller diameter construction is used in this case. For example, when piping 3/4 "install a bypass pipeline 1/2".

Conclusion

The bypass in the heating system, especially in the case of a network circulating pump, can be called one of the most important elements. Its installation should be carried out in compliance with all the rules provided by technology.

In modern heating systems, the bypass plays an essential function to ensure their normal operation, which is why its installation must be correct and planned.
