Atrophic rhinitis: forms, symptoms and treatment

Atrophic rhinitis is a chronic disease of the nasal cavity, which results in atrophy of the nasal mucosa. The real causes of the ailment have not yet been determined. The course of rhinitis is affected by unfavorable climate, harmful working conditions (tobacco, cement, silicate dust), acute, often repeated colds, surgical interventions or injuries of the nasal cavity, infectious diseases. When exposed to human dusty, hot, dry air depresses the ciliated epithelium and dries the nasal mucosa.

Atrophic rhinitis: symptoms

The disease causes dryness and the formation of crusts in the nose, the person has an unpleasant sensation of constriction of the mucosa, occasionally there are minor bleedings from the nose, which stop or stop after the introduction of a cotton ball with petroleum jelly, pressing against the septum of the nose wing. The atrophic process extends to the entire nasal cavity and affects the olfactory region, at which time the patients experience a decrease or total loss of smell. When performing a rhinoscopy, it is observed that the mucous membrane is pale pink, has a dry matte structure and is covered with small yellowish-green crusts. Especially the mucous nose in the anterior part of the septum is thinned.

How to cure rhinitis

Appointments are made by an ENT doctor in a polyclinic, the treatment is usually conservative. To facilitate the patient's condition, a set of local procedures are used and general treatment is provided. For topical use ointments and drops with softening, disinfecting and irritating properties are prescribed. A good effect is the oil solution of vitamins E and A, which is buried in the nose, in addition, fresh juice of Kalanchoe or aloe, oil solution of propolis and dogrose are used. As physiotherapeutic procedures use oily-alkaline inhalation. For general effect, biogenic stimulants are used - splenin, aloe extract, FIBS, intramuscularly B vitamins, subcutaneous placenta extract.

Separately there is a chronic atrophic rhinitis in the form of a malodorous atrophic rhinitis or ozens. This is a chronic disease of the nasal cavity, in which there is a sharp atrophy of the nasal mucosa, dense secretions, shrinking stinking peels, thinning the bone tissue of the shells and the walls of the nose.

Ozen affects mainly young women. Symptoms are expressed in difficulty breathing, excruciating dryness and itching in the nose, a sharp weakening or complete absence of smell. Patients complain of a putrid, pungent odor from the nose, which is noticeable to others, on the formation of thick dry crusts. When the lake as a result of bone atrophy, the shape of the nasal cavity changes in the direction of expansion.

Atrophic rhinitis in the form of an oasis is treated by washing the nose with solutions of soda, hydrogen peroxide, potassium permanganate, dioxin. After the washing procedure, tampons with Vishnevsky ointment and other antibacterial agents are injected into the nasal cavity. As a general treatment, antibiotics are prescribed.

Similar symptoms have chronic catarrhal rhinitis. Patients complain of a prolonged runny nose, the manifestations of which occur in autumn, intensify in winter, and decrease only in the spring and pass in dry summer weather. During an exacerbation, nasal breathing becomes difficult, constant discharge from the nasal cavity appears, having a mucous or purulent character that drains along the back wall of the pharynx, in addition, the sharpness of the sense of smell decreases, and taste taste is disturbed. Common symptoms occur in the form of recurring headaches, increased psycho-intellectual fatigue, cardiovascular and gastroenteric syndromes. Often patients complain of constant cold in the hands and feet, the humidity of the palms, and their increased sweating.
