What is the internal joint and how to replace it?

SHRUS is an abbreviation "hinge of equal angular velocities". In fact, this part is an integral part of the drive shaft of the car. On the one hand, this hinge is inserted into the bearing of the hub, on the other - into the differential. The main function of the SHRUS is to transfer the rotational energy from the engine to the drive wheels through the bearings of the hubs.

Life time

Due to its simple design, the SHRUS can serve without problems about 100-110 thousand kilometers. However, sooner or later this part fails, so every car enthusiast should at least have a superficial knowledge of how the internal SHRUS and the outer one is being replaced, including.

How to determine that this part has become unusable?

Firstly, this is, of course, mileage. If after reaching this run in the car a characteristic crunch appeared near the front hub when the steering wheel is turned, then the inner or outer SHRUS has come to a faulty condition. Check the status of this device can be and on the spot, scrolling the wheel until it stops. If there were characteristic sounds, then the fears were justified.

How to replace the right internal joint?

To start, you need to drive the car to a flat asphalt or concrete surface. Next, install the front of the body on a rigid support and unscrew the nut that secures the wheel hub bearing . On the right side, it will be either left, depends on the location of the broken SHRUS. In general, the hinges are recommended to be changed in pairs, so that after a couple of thousand kilometers again do not produce the same work.

But back to work. In order to successfully remove the internal joint, take the carabiner key for 19 millimeters and disconnect the fastening elements of the ball bearing, as well as the tip of the steering rod. Next, you need to grasp the brake drum or the disc (depending on what type of brake system is on your car) and pull the hub out of gear with the splined tip of the shaft. At the next stage, the shock absorber's stand is diverted to the side in such a way that it does not interfere with the subsequent work. Now it is necessary to grasp the drive shaft and simultaneously tap it with a small hammer until it is completely removed from the transmission gear. To beat it is necessary not so strongly not to damage a surface of a removed detail.

The final part of the work

Further we place the internal joint on the workbench and clamp it in the vice. Press the old joint and replace it with a new one. The shaft assembly with the new hinge is set back to its place - one end to the gearbox, the other - to the splined part of the hub. All subsequent assembly actions are carried out in the reverse order. When assembling devices, also pay attention to the hinge anther. If the CV joint has a damaged anther with deformations and microcracks, be sure to replace it. As long as there is a moment (all the parts are dismantled), it's a sin not to take this opportunity. And if the anther has recently been replaced or does not have deformations, then, of course, it is not necessary to change it to a new one.
