What causes pain under the knee?

Very many people, and maybe most, experience periodic pain under one or the other knee. Why does the knee ache? Basically, such problems arise as a result of playing sports, overloads associated with work or household duties.

The knee is the largest joint in the human body. The bones of the knee joint (knee) are divided into two discs, called menisci. The connection of the bones of the lower leg and the femur is carried out by means of muscles, ligaments and tendons. Inside the joint, the bones are covered with articular cartilage. It is with his help that shock absorption occurs, and for movement a smooth, sliding surface is created.

Pathologies that may cause pain in this area

Sometimes it hurts under the knee due to injuries to various knee structures. In particular, we are talking about cartilage and tendons, periarticular bags and so on. In addition, patients are often worried about not only the pain under the knee, but also the limitation of mobility, joint stiffness. Also, the joint can swell and increase in volume. Pain under the knee in conjunction with the above signs indicates that the patient has inflammation of the knee joint - arthritis.

Acute sudden damage. It is a trauma that usually provokes pain under the knee. Most often it can be caused by acute sudden damage. There are such damages, for example, with abnormal twisting, falling or bending of the knee joint. In this case, pain under the knee, as well as swelling and bruising can be strongly pronounced, developing after getting injured within a few minutes.

During the reception of a traumatic injury, blood vessels and nerve endings may also be affected or squeezed. In this case, the victim feels like pain under the knee, and tingling in the same area, weakness, numbness. There may be pallor or cyanosis of the skin.

Acute damage to knee joints can be different. In particular, these are traumas that cause pain under the knee:

  • Injuries of ligaments, tendons, connecting and supporting the knee - stretching, sprains and others.
  • Meniscus tears.
  • Torn ligament. Most often there is a tibial ligament rupture.
  • Fractures of bones (tibial, fibular, part of the thigh) or an arched calyx. The cause may be a fall, a blow on a solid thing.
  • Dislocations of the calyx, displacement. This damage is particularly susceptible to girls under 18 years of age. The cause of the pain are the joints that interfere with the movement, the bones stuck inside the soft tissues.
  • Dislocations of the knee joint, displacement. Such damage is rare, since a great deal of force is required for the onset of such a pathology. Injury refers to the category of heavy. In such cases, medical intervention is necessary.

Damage causing pain under the knee can occur as a result of overloads. These pathologies take place in cases of movements that are repeated many times, as well as with strong pressure on the knee area for a long period of time. To lead to irritation and inflammation of joints and tissues can load activities. This includes jumping, cycling, running and even climbing the stairs.

Overloads lead to such damages:

  • Bursits. These are inflammation of the articular bags.
  • Tendinitis - inflammation of the tendons.
  • Syndrome of fibrinous film, in which articular ligaments appear thickening, folds.
  • Pain under the knee, in the anterior part of it, resulting from overloads, overweight, and trauma.

In some cases, pain under the knee may be caused by problems in other parts of the body. For example, it can be nerve compression.

If there is pain in the knee, then you should not treat yourself. It is better to contact the nearest clinic for the provision of qualified care. First of all, you should consult a traumatologist. Other doctors who deal with similar problems are: an orthopedist, a manual therapist, a rheumatologist.
