Volgograd Medical University is the oldest higher educational institution in the city, it was founded in 1935 and was then called the Stalingrad Medical Institute. History of the University (1935-1941)

At the time of the foundation of the university there was only one faculty (medical) and eight departments. The first students were 172 people, which was significant for the then Stalingrad. In the city lived 500,000 people, of whom only 800 had medical education and could provide appropriate assistance to their compatriots.

The organization of such a university was justified, which is why a number of highly qualified scientists were sent to Stalingrad. Gradually, the number of places and specialties increased, and it became possible to form a large clinical base. In 1937, the first students of the university began to work in the regional hospital, and three years later the institute was formed such an important clinical base in almost all the necessary specialties.

University and the Great Patriotic War

In 1941, the life of the entire Soviet Union radically changed, but the medical institute in Stalingrad began to work twice as intensively as before. Only in 1941 the release was more than 650 doctors-specialists. In parallel with the basic training, the teachers engaged in the retraining of experienced physicians for work in hospitals.

In 1942, the front line came very close to Stalingrad. As a result of the bombing of the city, the institute was partially destroyed, several teachers and students were killed. After the Battle of Stalingrad, students and teachers of the university took an active part in its restoration. The institute received enormous help from colleagues from other universities and the People's Commissariat for Health, doctors from all corners of the Soviet Union came to Stalingrad to restore the school. The next issue of specialists was held only in 1944.

Post-war history of the university

The normal working capacity of the institute was restored only after the end of the Great Patriotic War. In 1961, Stalingrad was renamed, the same fate befell the medical institute. Now the name of the city sounded like Volgograd. Volgograd State Medical University - this was the new name of the university. Earlier, the institution was renamed into the academy, but the status of the university gave the university a completely different position.

In the same year the university received a separate room located on the area of the Fallen Fighters, which enabled the university to carry out its tasks in a timely manner. Today in this building is the main educational building (it also houses the administrative staff of the university). There appeared a large number of new faculties, individual scientific schools began to be formed.

As of 2015, the Volgograd Medical University is staffed by experienced teachers, including academicians and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, candidates and doctors of science, professors and associate professors. In 2013, the university was included in the list of 100 best higher education institutions after accreditation by the Ministry of Education.

The Institute was formed in 1943 and until 2012 was a separate institution, but after the reorganization became part of VolgGMU. Annually in Pyatigorsk branch on a full-time basis on a budgetary basis are trained more than 1300 students, about 750 pay the training. Thanks to the exchange program, 60-65 students from other countries study at the institute every year.

Dormitory

In VolgGMU come to study and nonresident students. Specially for them there are several hostels, calculated for a total of 1380 people. Natives from other cities can take more than 120 places, in exceptional cases, places in hotels operating at an educational institution can be provided.
