"Toyota Cresta" - a sedan of a business class from the Japanese automobile giant

Toyota is a Japanese car company. Modifications of many of its models were often singled out as independent families, which continued to be produced for several generations. One of the cars that gave rise to several other models was the sedan "Cressida".

History of creation

In 1980, the Japanese automobile giant decided to build a luxury model on the platform "Cressida" ("Toyota Mark II"). "Chaser", "Cresta" - the result of this idea. The novelties differed not only in design, but also in a wide choice of additional equipment, the quality of materials in the cabin and the technical parameters of the model.

For the production of "Toyota Cresta" (X-50, X-60) used a rear-wheel platform from "Cressida", the wheelbase was 3 mm longer. Dimensions of cars were also different: the body of "Cresta" became shorter than that of the older congeners, the width is the same, and in height increased by 55 mm.

Technical parameters were not the main distinguishing features of the novelty. The car was aimed at wealthy buyers. Halogen headlamps, fog lights, expensive and high-quality interior trim materials and upholstery - all this was included in the basic equipment of "Cresta". The car was equipped with a 2-liter petrol or diesel engine, working in conjunction with a 4-step "automatics", borrowed from the "Crown" model.

The second generation (X-70)

"Toyota Cresta" was so popular with buyers that the chairman of Toyota's board of directors, Eiji Toyoda, in 1983 initiated the release on its base of a full-size sedan, named "Lexus LS". In many ways, the car was oriented towards a foreign consumer.

1984 was marked for the Japanese company by the release of the second generation "Cresta".

The design of the car has changed: the shapes of the radiator grille and the hood have been transformed, and the side mirrors (with electric drive) have been transferred from the front wings to the side doors.

In addition, the wheelbase of the car increased by 15 mm - up to 2660 mm. The gasoline engine was improved. In place of the 2-liter diesel unit came a 2.4-liter engine. The transmission remained unchanged, this is a 4-speed automatic transmission. In 1985, the model underwent restyling, during which integrated front foglights appeared on the front bumper . In the same year, a turbocharged version of the 2-liter petrol engine was launched.

The third generation (X-80)

In 1988, the world saw the third generation of the "Toyota Cresta". The feedback of the owners of the car was confirmed by the fact that the company is moving in the right direction.

The model has changed both externally and internally. The upgraded platform with a wheelbase increased to 2739 mm has changed the dimensions of the car. Dimensions of his allowed to make the cabin more spacious, especially the seats in the rear passengers. The model was equipped with gasoline 2 and 2.5-liter engines or 2.4-liter diesel. Changes have also occurred in the cabin: more comfortable seats, a four-spoke steering wheel. The central console with the dashboard merged into a single complex.

After 2 years, a special, jubilee series was issued, featuring interior trim, seat upholstery and an appropriate badge.

The fourth generation (X-90)

In 1992, "Toyota" introduced the fourth generation of "Cresta", significantly different from the previous generation.

Changed the grille, bumpers, front optics "Toyota Cresta". The characteristics of the car were also transformed. The wheelbase of the car has not changed, which can not be said about the dimensions: the length of the body increased by 60 mm - up to 4750, width - by 55 mm - to 1750 mm, and height - by 15 mm - to 1390 mm. The line of gasoline engines was supplemented with 1.8 and 3-liter engines.

In addition, the model received a 5-speed manual gearbox, installed as an option. On the same basic version the same 4-speed automatic transmission was installed. The buyer could purchase not only a rear-wheel drive, but also an all-wheel drive version.

The fifth generation (X-100)

In 1996, the last, fifth generation of the model was released, until the year 2001, after which it was replaced by Verossa.

Exterior

"Cresta" fourth and fifth generation is difficult to call one model, as the design of the car has changed radically: smoother body shape, a changed nose and a U-shaped radiator grille that replaced the trapezoidal one. And in place of four horizontal lines appeared a lot of cells. We can say that a thorough tuning of the "Toyota Cresta" of the fourth generation was made.

It should be noted that the grille in the latter model has become integrated with the hood, whereas previously they were separate. The front optics also changed: the strict rectangular forms were replaced by smooth, rounded ones. In the front bumper there was one central section with an air intake, there were three of them before.

In 1998, the car experienced facelifting: the proportions of the front and rear optics changed. Compared with previous generations, the X-100 has grown slightly in size.

Interior

Cardinal changes in the cabin X-100 did not happen. There was an updated steering wheel, and the instrument panel was modified, the speed and speed readings became more clearly visible. Seats of the front row became wider, the size of the rear sofa increased.

Specifications

It should be noted that the equipment of the fifth generation is slightly different from the previous one. The 1.8-liter engine was removed from production, and the 2-, 2,5- and 3-liter engines, as well as the diesel unit of 2.4 liters, were upgraded.

As before, the motors work together with a 4-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed "mechanics". "Toyota Cresta" of the fifth generation was produced with a rear-wheel drive, but an all-wheel drive version was also available.

The car was delivered unofficially to the domestic market, and it was not very popular. Despite this, on the street there are representatives of all generations. Most often you can find cars in the body of the X-90.
