The growth of children in 1 year. WHO standards: table

For a newborn baby after the first cry, the important indicators of its development are growth and weight. At different stages of life, the child has jumps in growth and, conversely, falls. But the most significant is the first year when the baby grows most intensively, and already during this period it is possible to judge the state of his health.

Growth as the main indicator of the child's physical health

Height and weight are standard indicators that indicate the correct development of the baby. They are fixed immediately after birth and monitor their increase throughout the life of the child. Weight is an indicator, rather, the harmony of the development of the baby. But growth reflects the level of physical development.

Further, it is the rate of increase in body length that allows one to find deviations in the health of the child. Identified disorders, such as growth retardation, non-harmonious ratio of length to body weight, are often the first symptoms of any chronic disease. In order to detect the onset of the disease in time and provide timely treatment, it is important to monitor the growth rates.

Growth of children in 1 year

As a rule, at birth , a child's height rises from 46 to 56 cm. In the first year of life, a certain regularity is observed in the increase in the length of his body. Rates of growth by month are presented in the table.

It can be seen from the table that in the first 12 months of his life the child is gaining about 25 cm. This is the maximum possible jump in such a short time. Further, such a rapid increase in body length can be observed only during puberty.

Norms of growth in the first year of life

To monitor whether the child is developing properly, pediatricians and parents are helped by special standards established by the World Health Organization (WHO). The last time standard indicators were revised in 2006. WHO standards for boys and girls are developed separately, which is related to the specifics of their development.

As the tables show, boys are born a little higher than girls. This pattern remains until puberty. During this period, girls are driven into growth. In the future, the regularity is restored: men are usually higher than women.

How fast does a child grow after one year?

Swiftly the child grows exclusively in the first year of his life. Further, the rate of increase in the length of his body slows down. The growth of the child after 1 year will not increase so quickly, and sometimes jump: 5-6 years, girls 11-13 years, boys 13-15 years.

The growth rate is still slightly after the first birthday, but then gradually decreases until puberty. For example, the growth of a child of 1.5 years compared with a one-year-old baby is more by 6 cm, up to 2 years it increases by the same amount. Then, up to 3 years, children become 6 cm taller. Further, in some children, the length of the body will increase in a certain pattern or jumpwise. On average, before the adolescent period, children will add 4-6 cm per year.

What determines the growth of a child?

The growth rate of the baby is affected by certain factors. Some of them are permanent and can not be adjusted, for example, heredity. Others refer to variables. With the right approach and timely assistance in the future, it is possible to ensure a harmonious growth of the child.

Leading factors that affect the increase in body length of the baby:

  • heredity;
  • food;
  • sleep;
  • health status;
  • Place of residence, nationality.

At the same time, the growth of children in 1 year is more dependent on nutrition. Insufficient supply of nutrients is the main reason for the child's developmental lag. This applies to both the length of the body and the weight of the baby. When breastfeeding, measures should be taken to increase the amount of milk, otherwise it should be fed with mixtures.

Growth disorders in children

Failures in the rate of increase in the length of the child's body are associated with insufficiency of the growth hormone. Such a problem can be treated by an endocrinologist. But there are diseases associated with disorders in genetic cells. As a result, diseases that do not respond to treatment are emerging: gigantism and dwarfism.

In the first case, the child's organism produces an excessive amount of growth hormone, in the second - insufficient. The growth of children in 1 year is added in accordance with the norms, and further failures are revealed. With gigantism they can be seen already at the age of 5 years, with dwarfism - about two years.

The diagnostics carried out in time allow us to assess the level of physical development and take measures to eliminate the identified diseases. If in the second year of life the child will add less than 5 cm per year, then it is worth to sound the alarm and take appropriate measures.

Parents should not worry if the rates of growth and weight gain by months will deviate somewhat from the norm. Each child is an individual, assessing the state of his health in general, it is important to take into account not only the data of the tables, but also certain factors affecting the increase in the length of the body of the baby.
