The Bryanchaninov Manor: Architecture and Photos

In Russia, many ancient noblemen's estates have been preserved, which are of great interest to historians. To see one of them, you need to go to the village of Pokrovskoye, Vologda region. The Bryanchaninov Manor situated here is a monument of culture and history, a monument of landscape art of federal significance.

This estate is not the only one belonging to this ancient family (this we will discuss below). However, the estate is famous for the fact that it was born DA Bryanchaninov - the future bishop of the Black Sea and Caucasian Ignatius, whom the Orthodox Church canonized.

What can you see in the manor house?

The composition of the estate complex includes:

  • Master's house with galleries and wings (1810).
  • Church of the Virgin (1811).
  • Park and pond (XIX century.).
  • Stables (XIX century.).
  • Cellar (XIX century.).

History of the estate

The estate of Bryanchaninovs (Vologda) was a family estate of a Russian aristocratic old family. For outstanding military services they were granted the village of Pokrovskoe in the XVII century. For a long time there was a small estate and a family cemetery.

In 1803, he was inherited by Alexander Semenovich Bryanchaninov, and he decided to build a new house. Its construction was completed in 1810. A year later (in 1811) on the family graveyard of the Bryanchaninovs the Church of the Blessed Virgin was built. The estate was rebuilt in 1820 by the famous Moscow architect A. S. Kutepov. The estate belonged to the Bryanchaninov family until 1918. The last owners of it were the Brianchaninovs' spouses (Sophia and Vladimir). After October 1917, they left Russia.

A few years later (in 1924), on the territory of the estate, the first holidaymakers took the sanatorium "Oktyabrskie sprouts". He worked until the early nineties of the last century. During this time, the main house was rebuilt several times. The Intercession Church was closed and a warehouse was placed in it. However, thanks to the efforts of the management of the sanatorium as a whole, the estate has preserved its historical appearance. And already in 1960 it was taken under the protection of the state. In the troubled 1990s, the sanatorium was closed. After that, the manor complex began to rapidly decline.

Recovery

Fortunately, the unique structure was restored. Based on the sketches of the estate, the family archives of the Brianchaninovs, landscape plans and surviving drawings, a group of architects, led by S. B. Lukomsky, developed a project for the restoration of the estate.

Restorative work was carried out at this facility at the expense of the administration of the Vologda region with the blessing of Patriarch Alexy II. I must say that he twice visited the homeland of the celebrated church leader of the ROC of the XIX century, the famous Orthodox saint Ignatius (in the world of Brianchaninov) twice (in 1992 and 2007).

Control over the restoration work was carried out by the regional department of culture. In 2009, the restoration of the Bryanchaninov estate in the Vologda region was completed. On January 1, the manor house in which the saint Ignatius (DA Bryanchaninov) spent his childhood, is shared by the institution of culture and the Orthodox community of the Intercession Cathedral.

Since 2010, the spiritual and cultural enlightenment center has started its work here. Here you can see the museum exposition, which tells how the village of Pokrovskoe existed and developed. The Bryanchaninov manor is a landmark place for the Orthodox. Here the memory of the prelate of Ignatius, as well as of other worthy representatives of a certain kind, is carefully preserved.

In the spring of 2011 in Moscow, the author's team of the project for the preservation of the monument of culture and history of the Vologda region was awarded a government prize in the field of culture.

Architectural features

Until now, historians and researchers are interested in Vologda (Pokrovskoye). The Bryanchaninov manor in accordance with the existing version was built according to the project of the gifted local self-taught Alexander Sapozhnikov. But modern researchers put this claim in doubt, so elegant and rational were his calculations. A version appeared that the Bryanchaninov estate (Vologda) was designed by an architect from Moscow who was close to the school of Matvey Kazakov. At the same time, scientists find similarities in the composition of the complex of the Bryanchaninov estate with the creations of the no less famous architect Nikolai Lvov.

Master's House

Two-storey stone house, rectangular in plan, measuring 12x6 meters, is made in the style of classicism and is combined with two outhouses one-storey galleries. It is set on four Corinthian columns and has a balcony balustrade.

Outside it seems that it is quite small, but in reality the house is quite spacious - two floors and an attic, in which in the old days there were two large rooms. One of them, whose windows faced the village, was assigned to the master's room and bedroom. The second, turned into the garden, was the boudoir and the bedroom of the hostess. On the second floor there were children's rooms.

On the ground floor there was a hall, a drawing room, a dining room, in which there were family celebrations and official receptions, literary and theatrical evenings, guest rooms. I must say that the ruling hierarchs and governors often came to Pokrovskoe, to the hospitable masters. The servants lived in the outbuildings.

Special magnificence of the house is given to exquisite stucco decorations, which can be seen on the facades. Attributes of military glory - peaks and horse heads, helmets and banners - were tribute to the military merits of representatives of the famous Bryanchaninovs. During the restoration work, all these elements were restored.

The Bryanchaninov manor, the photo of which you can see in this article, has preserved its historical appearance to the present day. The layout of the manor is typical for the era of classicism (longitudinal-axial composition of the placement of the main zones).

Other buildings

In addition to the master's house, several buildings were included in the estate complex. A bit to the east of the house is the Church of the Intercession of the Virgin, made of bricks. It is very organically blended into the architectural style of the estate. In former times, the estate area was 1965 hectares, on which numerous buildings of economic purpose were built. Today they have preserved a human, wooden stable, a reconstructed priest's house.

A park

The Bryanchaninov manor is famous for its amazing park, which is the brightest example of landscape art of the 18th and 19th centuries, which fortunately we can still see today. The basis of his planning were eight lime alleys (they were brought to the estate by fifteen-year-old trees from special nurseries that appeared under Catherine II). Geometric lines of avenues intersect, forming the shape of a star.

Three terraces the park descends to the south of the hill, tapering downwards. The main avenue, which was once called "proekpekt", originates from the parterre flowerbed, which is broken at the southern facade of the building, passes into a path that stretches across the park to a pond (formerly famous for a huge number of fish). Fruit trees form the boundary between the first and second terraces of the park. On the middle terrace preserved earthen ramparts of the labyrinth, next to which was a stone grotto, built of cobblestone. Here, mainly deciduous tree species grow.

A large picturesque meadow is the lower terrace. There was a kitchen garden where vegetables were grown for the needs of the estate. I will give a cool and irrigation to this plant kingdom with a spring from the bowels of the earth. From this part of the garden was opened a magnificent view of the neighborhood and neighboring estates. And at the very end of this territory were greenhouses.

Bryanchaninov Manor (Vologda): how to get there?

The estate is located twenty-eight kilometers from Vologda. Pass to the village of Pokrovsky can be along the Novomoskovsk road. Having reached the sign "Vinnikovo-1" it is necessary to turn to the right and drive seven kilometers on the way to the museum complex.

Since the manor house is not too large, it can contain no more than forty visitors at a time. Therefore, the management of the complex recommends that you pre-register for excursion services. To do this, contact the administrator of the complex by calling 8 (921) 601-79-17.

The work time of the estate: from November 1 to April 30 - from 10.00 to 18.00; In the summer, the operation mode is extended by one hour. On Monday in the museum a day off.

The Manor "Old Limes" by Senator Bryanchaninov

This is another homestead belonging to the ancient family of Bryanchaninovs. It is located in the Pskov region, not far from the regional center of Loknia. Unfortunately, this manor of the Brianchaninovs is almost destroyed. On the site of the beautiful estate, only the manor park, outbuildings, where psycho-neurological boarding, gardens and a pond are now located, have been preserved. And from the manor house almost nothing left, except for two impressive reinforced concrete towers.

In the village of Mikhailov Pogost, which is nearby, you can see the Church of Vladimir the Virgin of God, built in a pseudo-Russian style. It was erected on the orders of the landowner Brianchaninova. Local residents claim that she thus wanted to atone for her sins, which consisted in cruel treatment of people.

Title History

Its so beautiful name - "Old Limes" - the estate was in the beginning of the last century. Before that, it was called rather prosaically - "Mountain". Originally the estate belonged to the landlords Alekseyev, who received land in the Velikie Luki district during the reign of Alexei Mikhailovich.

In the middle of the XIX century, according to the bequest of MI Alekseeva, the estate passed to its distant relative - NS Bryanchaninov. He was a senator, a royalmaster of the imperial court, a real state councilor.

In 1885, he left the service and retired. Taking up the improvement of the estate, he achieved excellent results: the estate began to look great, which is confirmed by the old photos.

«Old Limes»: description

The exact date of the original construction of the palace has not yet been established. There were 120 rooms in it, and the interiors did not repeat in any of them. Several rooms were occupied by the library, which numbered more than four thousand volumes, and a magnificent picture gallery with valuable paintings by foreign and Russian masters of painting.

The palace was equipped with running water and sewerage. In his right wing was a house church. In the early twentieth century, two towers of reinforced concrete with a height of 35 meters were attached to the main building. They created on the top observation platforms, which served as a place of entertainment and recreation.

The palace was surrounded by a beautiful park, occupying 15 hectares of land and 12 ponds, which were connected to each other by streams and canals. Through them were thrown graceful bridges with openwork bars.

Near the palace was a glass greenhouse. Rare plants were grown there. From all this beauty there were only lookout towers and ruins of the estate, which forever lost their original brilliance.
