Terek River: description and attractions

The Terek River is undoubtedly the largest on the territory of the Caucasus. This place is associated with many important historical events, as well as ancient legends. It is here that people often come to not only enjoy the beauty of a fast river, but also to visit famous places, see local sights.

For starters, it should be noted that this river originates in the famous Trusov Gorge, which is located on the slope of the Main Caucasian Range. Its length is about 623 kilometers. As for the area of the basin, it is equal to 43 square kilometers. The river crosses the territory of several countries, including Georgia, the northern regions of Ossetia, the Stavropol Territory, Chechnya and Dagestan.

Terek is a river with an ancient history. It is interesting that it was noted in ancient Georgian writings. In particular, Leonti Mroveli recalled her in The Life of Kartlia - then she was called Lomeki, which means "mountain water". As for the modern name, it means "fast waters" in the Karachay-Balkar dialect.

River Terek: agricultural importance

Naturally, such a large pond is of great importance for the development of farms in this region. After all, thousands of hectares of dry land are irrigated by its waters. In addition, a cascade of HPPs operates here.

And the lower reaches of the river are rich in different types of fish. Here is found trout and salmon, as well as catfish, pike perch, barbel and carp.

By the way, the surface of the river freezes only in an exceptionally harsh winter and even thus the ice is thin and unstable.

On the bank of the fast river there are many big cities and small towns, including Beslan, Kizlyar, Terek and Vladikavkaz. And, of course, each of them has its own attractions, which are worth a look.

Quite often travelers go to see the Daryal Gorge. Below the river there is the village of Eltokhovo - here you can see with your own eyes the ruins of one of the oldest Mongol-Tatar fortresses called Tatartop.

And next to the city of Terek is another interesting place. Here you can visit once the majestic city of Lower Djulat, which was considered one of the largest settlements in the times of the Golden Horde. At one time it was this place that became the center of trade, settlements of artisans, and also Islamic faith. The ruins of the mosque, as well as the underground mausoleum where the nobility was buried, still remained.

By the way, near the village of Borukaevo is a monument to corn. In fact, this is a kind of unique masterpiece, as there are only two similar structures around the world (another corn monument is in the USA, in the state of Iowa).

Very popular among tourists is a journey along the river, which takes, as a rule, several days. After all, only here in just a couple of hours you can get from this arctic glacier into the arid, hot steppe, watching how quickly landscapes, fauna and flora change.

In fact, the Terek River offers tourists a lot of other, no less striking attractions. In addition, extremely popular here are extreme sports, in particular, descent along the river on a boat. People come here to fish, rest and have fun.
