Syrup of licorice is a herbal preparation, which is obtained from the rhizomes of licorice naked. The presence of glycyrrhizic acid and glycyrrhizin in the composition determines the therapeutic effect of licorice root. The content of these components in the roots of this plant ranges from two to fifteen percent of the total mass. The next group of important biologically active substances are flavonoid compounds. Among them are flavonoids, chalcones and their isoforms. The number of these flavonoids reaches one to two percent. Among other things, licorice roots contain polysaccharides, also contains essential oils and coumarins. More from the rhizomes, in addition to the syrup, the spray "Epigen Intim", "Epigen Gel" is made.

Due to the fact that glycyrrhizic acid and glycyrrhizin are present in the root, licorice syrup has the following properties. It is capable of exerting an expectorant action, has an anti-inflammatory effect. It also has an immunostimulating and regenerating property. The drug has a pronounced antispasmodic and antiviral effect. In addition to antiviral activity, licorice root has an overwhelming effect on other pathogenic microorganisms, including staphylococci, mycobacteria and so on.

The extract of licorice root is indicated for acute or chronic bronchitis, tracheitis, bronchiectasis, pneumonia. It is also recommended to use bronchial asthma, sanation of the bronchial tree in the period of pre and postoperative conditions, in the treatment of wet and dry cough. Syrup of licorice can help with gastritis during remission, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcers in the healing stage.

Among the contraindications are: hypersensitivity, gastritis. It is also not recommended to use for exacerbation of gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers. Among the side effects, allergic reactions are noted, with prolonged use, there is an increase in blood pressure and peripheral edema, and the water-electrolyte balance is disturbed.

Syrup of licorice in pregnancy should be used with extreme caution and only for the purpose of the doctor watching you. Glycyrrhizin has a very pronounced sweet taste. According to these characteristics, it exceeds the sweetness of sugar by 50 times. Accordingly, patients with the presence of a disease such as diabetes mellitus, should use this medication only after consulting a specialist.

How to take licorice syrup?

Licorice syrup is taken orally, as a warm infusion of 100 ml. You can also dissolve five to ten milligrams of syrup in 200 ml of tea or water and eat after eating at least two to three times a day. In order to prepare the infusion, two or three briquettes of licorice root should be placed in a pan of enamel. Next, pour 200 ml of water, necessarily hot, and close the lid. Then it is necessary to heat the infusion in a boiling water bath, often stirring for 30 minutes. Cool the broth at room temperature for ten minutes, then you need to strain and squeeze the remaining raw materials. The resulting broth should be diluted with boiled water to a volume of at least 200 ml.

The duration of the course of treatment with this decoction is seven to ten days. After that, if there is such a need, a second course is held. The expediency of this is determined by the attending physician. In the event that sputum is poorly separated, in order to facilitate the process of expectoration, it is recommended that warm drink in abundant quantities. Children, the age of which varies from 1 year to 12 years, this drug is allowed to give no more than half a teaspoon at a time. In turn, children, the age of which exceeds this threshold, as well as adults, you can take a syrup no more than one tablespoon at a time.
