Speech is a powerful tool for influencing the listener.

The language of a person is understandable only when the words fixed in different dictionaries are used correctly and correctly. The "wrong" speech will be inconvenient for perception and will cause negative emotions in the listeners.

We all know that speech is an invaluable gift that allows a person to exist in a complex world of social relationships. It is the source of human sounds and signals, signs and symbols, expressed in both oral and written form. This is due to the use of different styles of speech.

Book style, direct and indirect speech

All of us in ordinary life use conversational or, in other words, everyday style of speech. This is a living verbal communication between people. However, for writing this style is unlikely to suit us. To begin with, we recall that a written speech is a consistent presentation of one's thoughts in the form of various signs and symbols. Each of us must have the so-called rules of written speech behavior. Without them, it is impossible either to write competently an official letter to the management, or to draw a greeting card to a jubilee and so on.

Book style - one of the most common in written speech. Its distinctive feature is the presence in the texts of other people's words transmitted by the author. Recall that a direct speech - this is someone else's words and thoughts, literally transferred by another person (the author). Schematically, a direct speech looks like this: the speech of another person and the author's words are cited. Example: "Sasha, will you go for a walk?" - my mother asked my eight-year-old son.

It is necessary to distinguish between direct and indirect speech. Indirect speech is only the transmission of information from another person and the meaning of his utterance without a literal reproduction. Important! Indirect speech does not duplicate stylistics, vocabulary and syntax from the primary source, does not preserve interjections, introductory words, and so on. For example: Vladimir said he would pick us up as soon as he could.

So, we found out that the speech styles define the rules of speech behavior. What other styles of speech help us to diversify verbal communication in society?

Other styles of speech

Imagine that at work you have something went wrong according to plan. Your boss asked to explain everything immediately in writing, that is, to write a so-called explanatory note. In this case, the official-business style of speech hurries to help you. Here everything should be clear, concise, impartial. If you have difficulties in writing this style, but are sure that your director is a person with an unlimited sense of humor, and you are a real lyricist, then you can try to formalize the document in a literary and artistic style. But it's better not to take chances. By the way, the literary and artistic exposition is much more complicated than the official business, since it does not contain cliches, well-established stamps, samples, and so on, inherent in the latter.

Another style of speech is scientific. This is all sorts of reports and abstracts. Probably, it is not necessary to explain what they are for. Since any abstract or report is written to inform the listener about a particular problem, this style statement implies the use of terms. It should be remembered that the unjustified filling of the text with terms makes the scientific style of speech pseudoscientific. In other words, it is not necessary to use in the reports unknown to you concepts and definitions.

In the media - on television, in newspapers and magazines - there is another style of speech, journalistic. It is used for news reporting, in various TV shows and so on.
