In 1945, he joined the army, serving in the Marine Corps in the Pacific. It is known that for the first few months that he spent in the ranks, he had hundreds of pages of impressions. In them he described the service in the navy. Upon his return to Middletown, the future writer graduated from the university. In 1951 he received a bachelor's degree in arts.
