Pain in the back and abdomen: causes, treatment, symptoms

Unfortunately, pain often invades our daily life. Of course, you can console yourself that if something hurts, then you're still alive, but it's best to try to eliminate it. What are the causes of pain in the back and abdomen, and what needs to be done to alleviate their condition?

Localization of pain

To understand what is happening, it is necessary to find out a few parameters characterizing the discomfort that has arisen. In order to determine exactly what could cause pain in the back and abdomen, you need to try to determine their location. If the pain in the back is more or less clear, then for the examination of the stomach will have to perform several actions:

  • You need to lie on your back and bend your knees slightly;
  • Put your palm on the abdominal wall and in a circular motion gently, but trying to deeply punch, determine the place where the pressure causes maximum pain.

For the convenience of diagnosis, the abdomen is divided schematically into the right and left halves. In various diseases, the focus can be in the right or left iliac regions, in the navel, in the right or left hypochondrium. In addition, the pain can be diffuse nature, when the stomach constantly hurts and it is impossible to determine the specific point where pain is the strongest.

The nature of pain

It is equally important to determine the nature of pain. They can be blunt, aching, squeezing or, on the contrary, sharp. A very dangerous symptom may be daggerache (this creates the feeling that they were hit with a dagger). Also, the pain can have a bursting character, as if the ball starts to inflate inside.

It is equally important to determine where the pain radiates. For example, there are often situations where the back hurts below, and these pains are given to the lower abdomen or thigh. Sometimes, on the contrary, pain in the abdomen can give in the lower back. In addition, over time, pain can change the location (appendicitis pain sensations are first observed in the epigastric region, but after a while descend to the right iliac region).

Concomitant factors

To establish an accurate diagnosis, it is equally important to determine what triggered the pain; It arose suddenly or developed gradually over several hours or even days; Which could provoke its appearance (excessive physical effort, hypothermia, stress); What other symptoms accompany painful attacks - fever, vomiting, diarrhea or, on the contrary, constipation, which lasted several days. All these data will help to draw a more complete picture of the disease and correctly diagnose.

Pain caused by abnormalities of internal organs

The most common causes of pain in the back and abdomen are pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract and urinary system. The same symptoms, but less often, can occur in diseases of the heart and bronchopulmonary system. Consider the most common diseases.

  1. Pathology of the genitourinary system (cystitis, pyelo-, glomerulonephritis, urethritis). These diseases often become the cause of what hurts the back down. In addition to the pain syndrome, these pathologies are accompanied by impaired urination (usually by frequenting), a slight increase in temperature, the presence of blood in the urine. Another pathology capable of causing severe pain is urolithiasis and, in particular, renal colic. It is she who can cause very much sore from the back. It is possible irradiation of pain in the groin or thigh.
  2. Appendicitis: its inflammation is often accompanied by pains that first have a diffuse character, and then most often localize in the ileal region to the right. However, it should be borne in mind that in some cases, pain can be observed in other areas of the abdomen. Most often, acute appendicitis is accompanied by low-grade fever (37.0), nausea, vomiting, chills.
  3. Intestinal infections also become a frequent reason that the stomach constantly hurts. They can be called by various microorganisms and viruses. With such lesions, there is a dull, spilled pain in the background of high fever. In addition, there is vomiting, diarrhea. In the stool, there may be impurities of mucus or blood.
  4. Pancreatitis also becomes a common cause, because of which the stomach hurts and rests in the back, with the pain more often located in the upper parts. They are accompanied by nausea and repeated vomiting, not bringing relief, dry mouth. The tongue is covered with a white coating on which traces of teeth are visible at the edges.
  5. Cholecystitis can cause pain in the right upper quadrant, which are given in the back, the right arm, shoulder, under the right shoulder blade. It is accompanied by bitterness in the mouth, nausea, vomiting, after which it becomes easier. Provoke an attack can fatty food or jolting in transport.
  6. Colitis (intestinal colic) is manifested by diffuse, sharp pains in the navel, accompanied by weakness, chills. If there are problems with the intestines, the attack can be triggered by the use of chocolate, coffee, high fiber foods.

Pathology of the musculoskeletal system

Various problems of the spine can also cause back pain and abdominal pain. Most often they are pulling or aching in nature and can radiate into the lower limbs and various areas of the abdomen. The following diseases can cause pain:

  • Osteochondrosis;
  • Hernia of intervertebral discs;
  • Trauma of the spine;
  • osteoporosis.

Pathology of the gynecological sphere

Women often often experience pain of varying intensity in the lower abdomen and lower back. Some of them do not carry a threat to normal functioning, such as menstrual pain or minor discomfort during pregnancy (late back pain and lower abdominal pain are so-called false fights). But it happens that the pain becomes a signal of serious problems. These include:

  • Threat of miscarriage - in the early stages of it can signal pain in the lower abdomen and spotting;
  • Ectopic pregnancy - manifested by severe (right up to unconsciousness) pain on the right or left in the lower abdomen;
  • Similar pain may result from rupture of the ovary or torsion of the cyst leg;
  • Endometriosis is characterized by persistent aching pain in the lower back and lower abdomen, worsening during menstruation.

Causes of pain in men

Men, too, can "boast" of pain, caused by diseases that are inherent only in the strong half of humanity. These include:

  • Prostatitis - the pain with this disease is most often localized in the lower back and may increase during urination, irradiating into the anus and sacrum;
  • Infections of the urinary tract are manifested by pain in the abdomen, which gradually spread to the lower back and give into the groin;
  • Inguinal hernia causes acute pain, against which you can detect a hernial protrusion.

What to do?

Obviously, pain in the back and abdomen can cause many different pathologies. So what if they appeared? First of all - do not engage in self-medication. If you are already diagnosed and you are sure that the pains are connected with it, then you can take the medicine. So, with pancreatitis or cholecystitis, as well as with pathologies of the urethra, the pain will help relieve antispasmodics. Anesthetics and anti-inflammatory drugs can alleviate the condition in diseases of the spine. If there are sudden severe pain in the abdomen, do not waste time - call an ambulance. Remember - with acute pain in the abdomen, if you do not know their cause, you should not take any medications. This is done in order not to distort the picture of the disease before the diagnosis.

If the cause of pain is not known, then you should not wait, wait for it to pass by itself, or engage in self-medication. Remember that lost time can lead to the development of serious complications that can endanger life.
