How to starch the fabric? A proven method

Things that you often use, and those that wear regularly, tend to wear out gradually, which means they lose their original fresh look. What needs to be done to "revive" or leave for a long time a new one, for example, a linen tablecloth or a favorite cambric blouse? One of the proven methods can be the starching of products. The things processed in this way become more durable and fresh. Therefore, we advise you to consult tips on how to starch the fabric, and follow the instructions described in this article.

Methods and varieties of processing products

If you are interested in how to starch the fabric, decide first which rigidity of the finished product you want to get. Depending on the structure, thickness and quality of the matter, it is necessary to determine the concentration and composition of the chemical solution for processing things. At the same time, usually do not handle the following materials: fabric costume, woolen things, tight jersey.

There are several levels of stiffness of starch:

1. Soft. It is applied to products from light fabrics: cambric, chiffon, thin jersey.

2. The average. Suitable for bed linen, napkins, blouses, men's shirts.

3. Tough. Used for collars, cuffs and knitted decorative volumetric products, for example, napkin-vases.

There are also several ways:

1. Traditional, time-tested method, which uses potato starch.

2. Special chemical compounds (liquids and powders), which are added to the water by hand washing at the last rinse or in an automatic washing machine when detergents and rinses are falling asleep.

3. All kinds of nebulizers and sprays. The most convenient option of all, as it does not require special preparation of solution, fabric and appliances. Usually, airborne droplets are processed during ironing at an average temperature.

How to starch fabric in a traditional way: a step-by-step guide

To process things in the usual way, it's better to use potato starch, but you can also use corn or wheat.

1. First of all, the product must be clean. Take care that there are no stains on it, since after starching, all the defects will be especially noticeable.

2. Prepare the solution by diluting the starch in cold water. Observe the following proportions:

  • For thin tissues - 5-10 grams (1 teaspoon) per 1 liter of water;
  • For bed linen - 10-15 grams (1 tablespoon);
  • For collars, volumetric napkins - 20-25 grams (2 tablespoons).

3. Then pour a little hot water into the prepared solution. After thorough mixing, the paste must be homogeneous, viscous and transparent. The presence of lumps is not allowed. When obtaining a turbid solution, it should be boiled for several minutes.

4. To the resulting paste, add water in a proportion of 3: 1.

5. To starch the fabric, lower the prepared object to soak in the solution so that it is completely submerged in it, and let it sit for 5 minutes.

6. Press the product and hang to dry. It is not recommended that things dry on heating appliances, batteries and balconies, since then it will be difficult to iron them.

7. To make the fabric well-smoothed, do not overdry the product, preferably if it is slightly damp.
