How to calculate the width of the curtains? Options for curtains. Patterns and sewing curtains

Did you decide to sew the curtains yourself into the room? Then you will need their exact dimensions. And today we will talk about how to get them right. How to calculate the width of the curtains, their length, take into account additional nuances. This is not at all difficult, and there is absolutely nothing to frighten the beginning designers.

How to measure height?

The height of the product is determined by measuring the distance between the floor and the eaves hooks. Do at least three measurements in different places to exclude the curvature of both the floor and the ceiling. If the resulting figures are the same, then your ceiling, like the floor, is quite even. If the sizes differ, mark each result. We will have to calculate separately for each of the measurements.

From the fixed size, subtract the distance between the lower edge of the curtain and the floor surface. The remaining result is the desired height of the curtain fabric.

Now about the width

And how to calculate the width of the curtains? It is equal to the distance between the earthed hooks of the cornice.

Such a thing as sewing curtains, requires a very accurate removal of measurements. Admitting an error of a couple of centimeters, you can completely ruin everything. If you decide to sew curtains in a specialized salon, then you know: for the correctness of the sizes given you will have to vouch your own signature. And your task - to check that the ordering officer correctly recorded the specified by you standards in the form with the data.

If the size of the finished product does not suit you, then you can change the "dimensions" only by issuing a new order for a fee.

Non-standard options

To avoid such annoying misunderstandings, it is necessary to learn a couple of simple rules, according to which such measures are taken. First of all, you need to start with the installation of the cornice. Without this, you will not get any exact size. If the chosen curtain model has a variable height (such as the "arch" type), at least two heights should be marked - the top lift and the lower edge. It is advisable to add a few intermediate dimensions to them.

It happens that the cornices above the windows are set obliquely. This option can be found in country houses, or when sewing curtains in a mansard-type room, as well as when decorating stairs. In this case, heights will be required for the upper and lower levels of each of the cornices, as well as their lengths in a straight line and in a horizontal projection. In the case when the cornice is curved in the form of an arch, it will be necessary to make a separate pattern for it.

We leave for the cloth

The next step in the independent sewing curtains - the calculation of the necessary amount of tissue. First of all, decide on the choice of material and specify its specific width. When you come to the store, you will find that the tulle for curtains, as well as the curtain fabrics, exist in widths from 1.4 to 1.6 meters (an average of one and a half meters). Another option is the height from 2.7 to 3.2 m (average 2.8 m).

When cutting the second format is more economical, therefore designers in the majority choose it. In addition, most of the lush and bulky elements can not be cut out of the fabric with insufficient width. Therefore, in our calculations we will focus on a height of about 2.8 m.

We focus on the cornice

The main measure that we need when determining the amount of tissue - the width of our cornice. If the chosen material has a large pattern and high density, it is enough to have a width one and a half times the size of the cornice. That is, we multiply its length by 1.5.

So, with a three-meter cornice, we need four and a half meters of fabric. This option is the most economical, but, unfortunately, not the most beautiful and aesthetic. Much more elegant looking curtains, decorated with pleats like a bow or beautifully assembled, while using a special curtain tape.

If you want curtains

The minimum of the fabric, at which the bow fold is possible, is two widths of the cornice. But the most spectacular is the view, if its width is exceeded by 2.5-2.7 times. Accordingly, in the above example (the width of the cornice is 3 meters), we need about 8 meters of fabric.

If in your plans fabric assembly, for which you need curtain braid, specify the amount of material on it from the consultant in the store. But in all cases, remember that it will take about 20 centimeters to bend the side seams, which should be added to the calculated footage.

Other varieties of curtains

According to the above scheme, we calculate the length of the fabric for sewing the usual shaded curtain and the inner curtain. If our project provides for lambrequins, then each of its elements will require additional material consumption, which should be calculated separately and then everything added up.

This task in this case is quite complicated - how to sew curtains. Patterns of finished products with all the calculations provided for the selected model, perhaps, will be its optimal solution. Another option is to contact a specialist-designer.

Much easier are those options for curtains, where such difficulties are not provided. For example, when the selected model refers to Roman curtains or Japanese curtain-panels. If we do not plan to collect our product in folds, then we take one width (or height, when it comes to fabric width of one and a half meters) and increase by the allowance for side seams.

What else do not forget

Consider here only one important nuance. In the case where the selected fabric is distinguished by a bright large print, at a width of 1.5 meters it will be necessary to adjust the pattern in the same way as the wallpaper label. In this case, an additional amount of tissue is to be purchased.

If our model provides a hard lambrequin with a base of glutinous fabric, then its size in ready form with added allowances for seams increases by 20 or 30 cm for planting curtain fabrics on the glue.

How to calculate the width of the curtains and their length for the selected style

Of course, before you measure the fabric, you should determine the size of the product itself. Blind can be either up to the floor (not to reach its surface by about 13 mm) or flush with the sill, and also below its level of centimeters by 8. While in our measurements we do not include the allowances for the hem at the bottom and the kuliska at the top edge.

How to calculate the width of the curtains? We define it, as already mentioned, focusing on the extreme lateral points of the cornice. You should provide a small allowance for the entry of one cloth to another in the center. When the window is located in the corner of the room, when measuring the width, one has to take into account the value from the corner to its edge. If this distance is very small (no more than 20 cm), then the places in order to normally extend the curtains are clearly not enough. Consider the option of transferring both canvases to the other side.

The concept of coefficient of splendor

Dimensions of curtains in a straightened form - not all. Think about the splendor of your future product. It depends on the density of the selected fabric and the shape of the top of the cusp. If narrow deep creases are assumed, they will take from 3 to 3.5 times the width of the window.

In general, be guided by the following figures: the coefficient of splendor for dense tissue is 2: 1, in fabrics with an average density, it is slightly larger - 2.5: 1. Well, the lightest fabrics should be chosen with a coefficient of 3: 1, that is, take the width of the curtains three times larger than the size of the cornice.

Pattern on fabric and kuliska

When determining the necessary amount of tissue, it is necessary to take into account the repetitions of the figure on it, the style of the upper cusp and all necessary allowances for the folds. The size of the pattern depends on its repeatability and lies in the boundaries between adjacent identical elements. It can be indicated on a coupon containing a description of the fabric. If there is no such information, you can calculate the size of the pattern yourself.

To obtain the size of each of the panels to the required length, one should be added one size of the pattern. Do not forget about the kuliska provided on the top edge of the product. Its width can vary from 2.5 to 20 cm. This value should be doubled and added to the calculated length of our canvas.

For example, with a ten-centimeter width of the kuliska, the total fabric consumption should be increased by 20 cm. For a separately cut kulisk, its length should be taken equal to the total width of the entire product, with the addition of at least 15 centimeters to the bend.

As you can see, independent sewing curtains simple style, including all the necessary measurements, the selection of fabric with the calculation of its right amount and taking into account some of the necessary nuances - it is absolutely not difficult, affordable and starting a tailor. We hope that our article has helped the reader to get a little understanding on this issue. We wish everyone success in mastering this interesting and useful lesson!
