Gladiolus: storage of corms

At negative temperatures, the gladiolus bulbs die, so they must be excavated for the winter and stored until the spring planting. In the technology of growing this crop, harvesting, processing, followed by drying and storage are the most crucial steps. Properly cleaned depends on the quality of planting material and storage of corms throughout the winter.

Gladiolus: storage and preparation for it

Corms are excavated forty-fifty days after the blossoming of the gladiolus. If they are not ripened by ripening, that is, not past the flowering stage, then next year they may not ascend. Therefore gladioli must be prepared in advance for the cleaning phase. Preparation consists in the total cut of all the inflorescences regardless of whether they have already had time to fade or not. To dig them out is necessary even before the stable colds come. Frozen to two degrees of frost yet do not cause tubers harm, but with a more severe drop in temperature they should be covered with mulch.

Gladiolus, the storage of which has already been planned, is excavated in a certain order. First you need to dig out the early and middle varieties, after them comes the turn of the later, and the very latest digs are those that were grown from children. If you are dealing with varieties that have similar digging dates, it is better to start with dark and lavender-blue flowers, since they are more prone to fungal diseases. The process of excavating corms is best done in warm, dry weather, as in very damp soil it is possible to lose a lot of children who are able to germinate on this place for the next three years, which will clog the clean planting of plants. However, if you are already under pressure, then you need to dig out on time, regardless of the weather conditions.

Gladiolus, the storage of which you plan, you must carefully poddevat with a shovel, along with a piece of soil. Then it must be carefully shaken out over the film, this will avoid scattering children in the bed. After this, you can use the pruner to get rid of the stems, leaving the hemp to 0.5-1 centimeter in height. In adult plants, the mother bulb and roots must be removed immediately. In tubers grown from children, you just need to prune the roots, and before planting they can be removed completely. After cleansing, all the bulbs must be carefully inspected, and the sick and the infected should be burned.

Gladiolus, the storage of which depends on the correct preparation, it is necessary to rinse in running water, then hold for 20-25 minutes in a solution of potassium permanganate. After the tubers dry up, they can be sent directly to drying in a warm place (the temperature should be 25-35 degrees Celsius) for two to three weeks. After that, the drying takes another 4-6 weeks at a temperature of 20-25 degrees. Twice a day bulbs are required to stir for even drying.

How to store gladioli in winter

Drying is an important stage in the preparation, since the state of the tubers depends on it on winter storage, as well as the subsequent growth and flowering. Poorly dried bulbs can suffer from fungal or bacterial infections and die. That is why it is better to dry them than vice versa. After drying, they must be placed in sacks or boxes according to grades, on each package it is necessary to indicate the grade and color, and then send it to storage in a cool dry place at a temperature of 3-7 degrees Celsius. If these conditions are not met, then active growth of root and stem tubercles begins.

During storage, it is worthwhile to review the planting material monthly for the appearance of diseases. You should not have any problems with how to store gladioli in the apartment, as for a small number of tubers you can allocate space in the refrigerator.

The next year all healthy bulbs are planted.
