Grapes are grown from time immemorial. During the existence of these berries a variety of varieties were bred. Winegrowers - professionals and amateurs - are doing everything possible to achieve an ideal look with good taste and high yield. Grapes of the North Beauty, or Olga, has been very popular for more than fifty years. All about this class can be found in our article.

History of Olga

Where did the second name, consonant with the female name, exactly do not know. There is an opinion that they gave the name of their daughter to the daughter of I. Shtin and I. Filippenko, who took him out. The main name of the variety was received for its wide distribution not only in the southern parts of the planet, but also in the northern latitudes.

The beauty of the North is a hybrid grape variety. He was bred by crossing the Dawn of the North and Typhy the Pink. The new species took from parents all the best taste qualities and adaptability to unfavorable climatic conditions. To create Beauty of the North were the breeders of the Institute of Horticulture named after IV Michurin and registered a new variety in 1960. Wine growers immediately noted the high yield and incredible taste qualities of their offspring.

Spread

Variety of grapes of Krasa Severa immediately won the love of the whole country and began to grow on many sites. Thanks to the endurance and frost resistance, this berry was able to get to grow gardeners not only in the South, but also in the middle belt of the North. It is widely distributed in the Far East and Siberia. Until now, the beauty of the North enjoys great popularity among the inhabitants of Belarus and the Baltic States. Vineyards of the Krasnodar Territory are famous for our whole country, and Olga is also growing on these territories.

The variety range of grapes is constantly updated and improved, so many outdated species are being squeezed out. In the South, the beauty of the North is practically not grown, since for these latitudes there are many interesting varieties. Grapes of the North Beauty do not lose relevance in areas where climatic conditions are not suitable for growing more thermophilic creatures. The described variety has a high frost resistance, transfers the temperature drop to minus 26 degrees. The vineyards of the Krasnodar Territory are an ideal place for cultivating the variety, since the winters are unpredictable there. He is not fastidious, practically not exposed to many diseases that affect the grapes. But we'll talk about this a little later.

Application

In the description of Krasi Severa it is said that this grade belongs to the dining group. Predominantly used fresh, but many wine growers who grow Olga only for personal consumption, make home-made juice and wine. The tasting evaluation of grape juice is very high, keeping at a level of 8.5 points. From the Beauty of the North, you can make drinks without the addition of sugar, since its berries are in sufficient quantities. Products made from this variety are of decent quality.

The described grapes can be used as a vitamin supplement, as it contains a large amount of folic acid (per 100 milliliters - 0.23 grams).

In the market, the vine of Krasa Severa is also popular. The variety is endowed with high transportability and can be transported for long distances, while not losing its original form, taste and freshness. The same applies to storage. Grapes of the North Beauty will please you after collecting up to the New Year! Agree that it is pleasant in the midst of winter to pamper yourself with fresh, individually grown grapes.

The Beauty of the North (Grapes): Variety Description

The bushes are tall, grow well and grow quickly. The vine is long, and all its shoots mature during the vegetative period, this allows severe frosts to be tolerated without damage to the future crop. Grapes of Olga are quite large, can weigh up to 900 grams, they have a conical shape, they look slightly loose. The berries themselves are large, round, but somewhat elongated, with an average size of 19x21 mm. Maturation of the fruit lasts for 110 days, taking into account the total temperature of the warm season at least 22 degrees. Harvest is collected in mid-August.

The skin of the berries is translucent, thin, can have a waxy coating. If there are heavy rains in the ripening season, it may crack. In each berry there are from two to four bones.

Flowers The beauties of the North are self-pollinated, but still prone to decay. The variety has a high yield, and for each new shoot, there are two inflorescences. Leaves are three-lobed, weakly divided or not cut at all. On the underside of the leaf there is a slight soft puff.

Grapes of the North Beauty is highly resistant to diseases. Oidium and mildew are the most common ailments of the variety. But there is good resistance to gray rot.

Berries in high humidity conditions can be in a mature state for a long time on the bush. They will preserve their appearance, they will not rot.

Taste qualities

The berries of Olga are very juicy and fleshy. Sugars in them about 17%, acidity does not exceed 5.4%. The taste is pleasant, refreshing, without any special features. There is no sign of muscat in it. The aroma is weak, almost imperceptible. The peel has an easy herbaceous taste, which is a distinctive feature of the taste qualities. Thin peel is very soft, easily eaten.

Vine growers argue that the older the bush, the more juicy and sweeter on it berries. Also, as you mature, the proportion of sugar in berries increases, so you need to wait until they fully mature.

Planting of the vine

Initially, I would like to note that to obtain the beauty of the North, a frost-resistant grade was used, and the created species also has a high resistance to colds. Therefore, you should not choose a place where the bush will be protected from wind, rain and frost. It is worth taking seriously the choice of soil. It is advisable to dilute the soil with half the sand for sanding the vines. For each bush you need a vast area, at least six square meters. This depends on the yield, because the bushes need a lot of nutrients. If you select a smaller area, the individuals will share the necessary substances with the neighbors, and the yield will be low. Between the rows the distance should be two meters, and between the landings not less than three.

Planting of the germinated cut is standard. It is necessary to dig a pit at least half a meter deep. At the bottom is a mixture of humus and sand. Then a hole is placed in the pit, it is covered with earth, extracted from the very depth. The root cervix should remain on the surface.

After the appearance of new shoots, it is necessary to choose the four strongest and strongest ones, and the rest to be removed by cutting with a special pruner. The remaining shoots will need to be fixed on the trellis.

How to make trellis for grapes?

Just planted cuttings do not need trellis per se. It will be enough to dig a nearby stick and tie a young bush to it. In the second year it is necessary to engage in a full garter of the vine, which must be performed with the end of frost, but until the moment of bud blossoming. So, how to make trellis for grapes?

Requires concrete or metal supports, not shorter than two meters and a diameter of 15 centimeters. Of course, you can dig in and wood, but only oak or acacia, because they are less exposed to rot. If wooden supports are chosen, then it is necessary to prepare them properly: remove the entire bark from the lower part to be digested, and soak in a five per cent solution of copper sulfate, which is prepared in a ratio of 0.5 kg to ten liters of water. To ensure that the tapestry has lasted longer, grease the digging part of the support with resin.

Supports are digged on both sides of the bush at a distance of half a meter and in the depth of just half a meter. Between the poles several rows of 1.8-2.4 mm galvanized wire are pulled. If the grape planting site is in the shade, then it is worthwhile to raise the ranks higher, if in the sun, then up to one and a half meters. The distance between the rows should be half a meter.

Garter vines to the trellis should occur as the bush grows. The first shoots in spring are attached to the first and second rows, giving the kidneys the same space for development and growth. Tying is necessary tightly, so that when swinging the vines are not displaced.

Further Care

Fruiting will begin after 2-3 years, but before that the plant still needs proper care. It is necessary to prune it, so as not to overload the bush, spray from diseases and pests. What to spray grapes, we will tell in the further maintenance.

When eyes appear, pruning is necessary, leaving no more than 10 eyes is recommended. If you want to get larger berries, then leave no more than 5-6.

When preparing for the winter, the grapes are removed from the trellis, covered with a special film. Grapes of the North Beauty do not need such protection, if there are no long-term frosts below 26 degrees.

Treatment

Spring processing of grapes from diseases is an obligatory measure. Every viticulturist knows that bushes easily succumb to diseases and are very poorly treated. So than to spray grapes?

At the beginning of the season, when the plant wakes up and begins to grow actively, the first treatment is necessary. Mildew uses Bordeaux liquid, kuprostat or diluted copper sulfate. With oidium, they are fighting with the help of a special topaz or colloidal sulfur.

When the first two leaflets appear on the shoots, it is necessary to perform treatment for pests with "BI-58" or "Carbophos" preparations.

With proper care, you will annually enjoy a high harvest of delicious grapes!
