Exquisite yellow peonies - the perfect creation of nature

Magnificent colors, elegance, variety of forms - about the pion, as one of the most ideal creations of nature, you can talk endlessly. And its floral fragrance? It's just a miracle! And only the rose, perhaps, has overtaken it in its charm and perfection. These two plants are similar not only to their amazing beauty, but also to the variety of species. Yellow pions have become especially attractive lately. Consider the history of their appearance, some species and features of selection.

Peony is the king of flowers

Long ago this plant was considered a symbol of peace, happiness and love. The main attractive feature was noted - the multiplicity of buds and a sufficiently long (up to a month) period of their gradual unfolding and wilting. Yellow pions have recently gained special popularity from all existing species. Botanists appreciate old varieties and are constantly working on bringing out new ones, with even more beautiful inflorescences. What attracts the surrounding yellow peonies? Photos clearly demonstrate all the richness of the decoration of buds, their splendor and magnificence. But in addition to the appearance of flowers have an amazing and fairly stable flavor. Consider how these flowers appeared, and also tell about the success of breeding.

Herbaceous varieties

Do not think that this is such a novelty - yellow peonies. The varieties listed below were discovered by botanists in nature a few dozen years ago.

  1. Peony of Mlakosevich. This is one of the first yellow-flowered plants that was discovered by the Polish botanist in the Caucasus in the late 19th century. By the way, this is a rather rare kind of grassy peonies. He has another, a joking name - "Witch Molly." This perennial plant reproduces seeds (experts say that the greatest germination is painted in blue). Flowers are single, lemon-yellow.
  2. Peony crowned, or Golden Wheel. One of the best herbaceous representatives. Discovered in the late 30-ies of the last century in the northeast of China during the Japanese occupation. The Chinese consider it rare and argue that this peony is of the milk-flowering only yellow. In addition to flowers, kidneys and rhizomes, it even has leaves of a greenish-yellow color.
  3. Daurian peony. A Latvian researcher discovered this flower during a trip to Iran. The color is unusually bright. Based on it, five subspecies are derived.

Yellow Peonies: The History of Breeding

Initially, in nature botanists were found several types of flowers. Then the yellow peonies, growing in the wild, became a living material for experiments. The Frenchmen V. Lemoine and L. Henry began the breeding work at the beginning of the last century. They crossed the wild treelike yellow peonies with large-flowered peonies. The result of the experiments were plants known as hybrids of lutea. Then in the 50-ies of the XX century, the work continued the American breeder A. Saunders, having received and registered more than 75 pods. Many other plant breeders have also made attempts to introduce new varieties. But the main secret of selection, as the researchers understood, consisted in skilful work on crossing shrub and grassy peonies.

Important tasks of breeders

Despite the diversity of the appearance of the buds, the researchers have always set the main goal - the removal of the pion as brightly as possible, a true yellow color. This work has always been one of the most fashionable and relevant areas. Hybridization did not work for quite a long time, until the researchers tried to cross the treelike and grassy yellow peonies. The varieties obtained in 1958 with the help of this method by a horticulturist from Japan, Toichi Ito, were distinguished by a more saturated coloring. This was a kind of breakthrough in science. A little later, in 1974, having acquired joint rights to a hybrid, the owner of the nursery in the US, Luis Smirnov, officially registered him in the register and brought out four new subspecies.

Features of intersectional hybrids

If the ancestors had only a monophonic coloring and not such magnificent and wavy caps, then modern species can boast a number of advantages:

1. "Conveyor" of flowers. On one stem per season, usually replace each other up to 10-15 and even 30 buds. In addition, almost all varieties can delight the eye by the simultaneous dissolving of several colors.

2. Features of forms. In place of smooth, though fluffy, inflorescences came wavy, terry and jagged.

3. Strong stems. Thanks to crossing, their elasticity increased. This allows you to more safely use peonies for landscape design. After all, even under heavy rainfall, the stems of the plant will remain erect.

4. Color options. In addition to the usual color, the simultaneous combination of several shades and a wide palette on the theme of yellow variations pleases the eye.

The future of intersectional hybrids

What are the goals and plans for breeding pions set themselves breeders, growing yellow peonies? First, the expansion of the color palette. As they say, there is no limit to perfection, is not it? Secondly, the increase in the bushiness of the foliage, as well as the possibility of repeated flowering in autumn. And, of course, the result of the efforts will be that the beauties we are considering will be more known, people will be able to multiply yellow peonies intensively. Where to buy this miracle? So far, this can only be done in special nurseries. But in the future, as their popularity grows, thanks to active breeding and, as a result, lower prices, beautiful yellow flowers decorate the personal plots of any gardener.

So far, these handsome men are widely used only in the compilation of fashionable floral compositions, including wedding. More and more modern brides want their bouquet decorated with a yellow peony. Customers' reviews almost always sound the same: "Stylish, fashionable, elegant and fragrant!"
