Name day Boris. Life of the holy martyr Boris

As soon as the matter approaches the name-day, one immediately wants to know the history of the patron saint, whose name we received at baptism. Otherwise, the whole meaning of the name day is lost. After all, on this day you have to try to come to the temple, pray before the Lord and your saints, to continue to receive help and protection from enemies and everyday adversity, and when the last hour of the earth comes, you will have a penitent and ungodly death. And now we will ask, when is Borisovna's birthday party? But before answering this question, let us turn to the history of ancient Russia, because the most famous saint with this name is the Russian prince Boris, who is remembered in conjunction with the holy Prince Gleb. However, there were many other, already modern, locally respected saints Borisov.

The Passion-Bearers

Before we begin to consider the issue of when the namesakes of Boris, we look far into history to find out what our saint has become famous for. Boris and Gleb are two pious brothers, Russian princes, who were martyred in 1015. These were the sons of the Kiev prince Vladimir Svyatoslavovich, born by the Byzantine princess Anna. After the death of his father in the internecine war for the throne, which began in 1015, the brothers Boris and Gleb were murdered by the elder brother Svyatopolk the Wretched.

These were the first Russian saints, who were canonized as martyrs of martyrs. Now the Russian Orthodox Church honors them as defenders of the Russian land, heavenly assistants and patrons of Russian princes. Boris's birthday is held twice a year, but more on this later.

The history of the life of saints Boris and Gleb is recorded in ancient literary works, in the "Legend" of Jacob Chernorizza and in "Reading" by Nestor the Chronicler. In honor of these saints, a huge number of churches and monasteries have been built.

Life

Boris and Gleb were baptized with the names Roman and David. Although by that time the name Boris had ceased to be pagan, and he could be used in the name of baptism. For example, already in the tenth century the canonization of Prince Boris baptized Bulgaria.

He was born not long before the Baptism of Rus by his father Vladimir and was raised in the Christian faith. He received an excellent education, read the Bible, the Tradition of the Holy Fathers and the lives of the saints. His brother Gleb from childhood was close to his brother, and so both grew kindhearted and merciful.

About 987-989 years. From his father, Boris received the right to reign in Rostov, and Gleb in Murom. When Prince Vladimir fell ill, Boris was called to the capital city of Kiev. But then his father sent him and his squad to repel the attacks of the Pechenegs. But he did not meet Pechenegs anywhere and on the way back he stopped on the river Alta, where he soon learned about his father's death and that Svyatopolk had taken his throne. The squad wanted to go to war with him, but Boris did not want to fraternize bloodshed. Then the father's army left the pious prince, and he was left alone with his young men.

The struggle for the throne of the king

Svyatopolk self-established in Kiev. He could not resist and decided to send the boyars led by Putsha to Boris, since the latter loved the people very much, and this made him a dangerous rival. The soldiers crept up to the tent of Boris on the night of July 24 (30) and heard the singing of psalms from there. They decided to wait until Boris fell asleep. As soon as Boris finished his prayer, saddened by his father's death and, knowing his brother's evil intention, went to bed. The killers suddenly burst into the tent and pierced the body of Boris and his servant George, who wanted to protect his master.

Mortally wounded, but still alive, Boris, they wrapped themselves in the tent cloth and were taken. Svyatopolk, worried about such a thing, sent the Varangians to finish off Boris. And it was done - he was killed with a sword in his heart.

The prince's body was secretly delivered to Vyshgorod, and there he was buried near the church of St. Basil. At that time, St. Prince Boris was 25 years old.

To the theme of "Names of Boris" it is necessary to add the fact that afterwards, as brutally and barbarously, in a month or so Svyatopolk also dealt with Gleb, who forbade his servants from using weapons to protect him. After a while Gleb's body was also transported to Vyshgorod and buried next to the tomb of Brother Boris.

Names of Boris in the church calendar

So holy martyr Boris received a martyr's crown from the Lord, was pious with the righteous and settled with the apostles, and prophets, and with the faces of other torturers, having fun in the face of the saints and singing with the Angels.

Day of the angel Boris is celebrated twice a year 2 (May 15) and July 24 (August 6) - the day of the murder of the prince. Separately, the day of the murder of Prince Gleb on September 5 (18) is honored.

Many mistakenly think that the day of veneration of St. Boris on June 20. Date seems to be close to the name day, but still wrong. The entire Orthodox Church celebrates the Day of the Holy Spirit on June 20.

The life of these two holy martyrs was sacrificed to love - the basic Christian good deed. "He who says," I love God, "and hates his brother, is a liar" (John, chapter 4, verse 20).
