Engine repair YaMZ-238

The diesel engine YMZ-238 (Yaroslavl Motor Plant) is installed on many commercial vehicles, including MAZ and KAMAZ heavy tractors . The given model of the motor has deserved a wide recognition of drivers, and all thanks to a high twisting moment and reliable operation. But still the engine, like many other units, will sooner or later require repair. In this article, we will consider the process of preparing the YaMZ-238 engine for repair.

It should be remembered that before the unit goes to a special site, it must be thoroughly rinsed. And only after all its components will be deprived of all kinds of dust and dirt, you can proceed to the next stages.

Each repair operation of YaMZ-238 must be performed by special tools and instruments that must be used for a particular type of work. For example, pressing ball bearings, bushings and rollers must be done on a certain puller. If there is no such device, the details can be dismantled using mandrels. In no case should not be hammered on any parts in the hope that it will be removed. Of course, this motor, although it seems at first glance to be huge and massive, but the actions with the use of a sledgehammer and similar tools can lead to the most unpleasant consequences, including the major overhaul of the YaMZ-238 engine .

The characteristic of all paired parts is that when removing one of them the unit will no longer function properly. Therefore, when repairing, do not confuse the location of paired parts and even worse - forget about their installation. And such spare parts as the rods and bushings of the pumping pump, the cam shaft of the high-pressure fuel pump , the nozzle needles and many others belong to this category.

One of the main stages of preparation of ICE for major repairs is its removal from the car. This process does not like mistakes, so all you need the part is as indicated in the truck manual. Here it is worth adding that the removal of the motor is best done using 4 steel hooks. And this is done as follows - the four eyebolts cling to these details, and using a chain and a winch (or other equipment with a lifting mechanism) rises the entire unit.

Also, before starting the repair work, it is worthwhile to take care of the temporary place of storage of the engine. It is advisable that YaMZ-238 be installed on any stand, but do not forget about the pallet, which is also vulnerable to damage.

And at last a brief instruction on how to disassemble this unit:

  1. Carefully unscrew the bolts on the clutch housing (it is important not to damage the drive shaft of the gearbox).
  2. Remove the nuts on the clutch cover and remove the pressure plate.
  3. We take out the front and middle disks (for YaMZ engines of modifications 238-K), as well as the slave (for all other models of the engine).
  4. We remove from the fasteners the starter (there are 2 clamping bolts), the generator of pneumatic brakes, its compressor, as well as the impeller of the fan.
  5. We take out the air filter and four side plugs.
