VAZ-2114, ignition lock: methods of troubleshooting and installation of a new device

Starting the engine, its systems, as well as other important devices and mechanisms in the cars of the Samara family without an ignition lock is impossible. Those car owners who had to deal with a malfunction of this device, know what could result from its unexpected failure. Especially if it happens on the way.

Where is the ignition switch on the "fourteenth"

In cars VAZ-2114 the ignition lock unlike "classics", is located not on the instrument panel, and on the right, on a steering column. Above it is covered with a plastic casing, so only the upper part of the "larva" opens to our gaze.

The VAZ-2114 ignition lock consists of five main parts:

  • Steel casing;
  • Locking mechanism;
  • Locking device;
  • Contact group;
  • Key.

The device is placed in a steel case, which is designed to protect it from burglary. As for the locking mechanism, it almost does not differ from the usual for us door lock.

Locking device allows you to lock the steering shaft in the absence of a key. In a simple way, it protects the car from theft. A contact group is an element that is responsible for starting the engine and its systems. The key of the ignition lock VAZ-2114 serves to unlock the locking device and activate the group of contacts. Without it, you can not start the engine without disassembling the device.

Principle of operation

The lock works as follows. When the key is placed in the well, its locking mechanism is deactivated. This is due to the reverse movement of the special rod. Turning the key to the first position, you will power "15" and "30" contacts. This will alert (but not include) the following elements:

  • Ignition system;
  • Headlight lamp;
  • External light signaling;
  • Electrical equipment of the instrument panel;
  • Cleaners and windshield washer;
  • Cigarette lighter;
  • Rear window heater;
  • Excitation winding of the generator.

If, in the car VAZ-2114, the ignition switch is moved to the second position, in addition to the equipment listed, the starter will start. As you can see, a lot depends on the serviceability of the device under consideration.

Symptoms of a malfunction

What are the symptoms of a failed ignition lock? To begin with, its malfunction can be either mechanical or electrical. In the first case this is:

  • Jamming of the lock in one of the positions;
  • Impossibility to unlock the steering shaft;
  • Ignition inclusion by a "non-native" key or other object.

If the electrical lock is faulty, you may notice the following symptoms:

  • The warning lights on the instrument panel do not light up or light up and periodically go out;
  • The starter does not start;
  • Some or all of the electrical appliances do not work, the circuit of which is fed through the ignition switch (cigarette lighter, headlights, washer, wipers, etc.).

Why the ignition key goes out of order?

Jamming of the device is possible because of the wear of the "larva" itself or due to problems with the contact group. Faced with such a malfunction, do not use force to turn the key in the right direction! Do not need to "tear" the steering wheel if it is impossible to unblock it. It is better to carefully disassemble the lock and find out what's the reason. But about this a little later.

Noticing that the ignition in the car can be turned on with any key or foreign object, hurry to replace the "larva" or the device assembly. So you will protect your car from possible theft.

If the ignition switch works fine on the VAZ-2114 car, but when it is turned the instrument panel does not light up, the starter does not start, electric appliances do not work, so the contact group probably failed. A similar problem can arise because of its natural wear and tear. Contacts after some time are erased, which leads to the breakage of the electrical circuit. It is also possible to burn them, caused by voltage surges, constant overloads, due to the use of additional electrical appliances and their incorrect connection.

Important: if you want to install additional electrical equipment in your car, connect it to the on-board network only via the relay!

Can I check the contact group myself

Diagnostics of the contact group is to measure the resistance between certain terminals on the harness of the device wire harness.

To verify it, you need:

  1. Remove the plastic cover of the steering column (you need to unscrew the three screws).
  2. Disconnect the ignition wiring wires of the VAZ-2114 (remove the socket from the socket).
  3. Turn on the ohmmeter (if you have a multimeter, put it into the resistance measurement mode).
  4. Connect the test leads of the device (polarity does not matter) to the terminals "4" (upper right) and "7" (second from the bottom right) corresponding to the contacts "15" and "30".
  5. Turn the ignition switch to the first position.
  6. Read the ohmmeter reading.
  7. Switch off the ignition, connect the instrument's probes to the terminals "3" (second from the top right) and "7" corresponding to the contacts "50" and "30".
  8. Turn the lock to the second position.
  9. Measure the resistance between the terminals.

If the ignition lock VAZ-2114 (injector) is OK, the resistance between the contacts will be zero. Otherwise, most likely, the contact group of the device has become unusable.

Repair or change

What should I do if I find a malfunction of the ignition switch? Of course, you can try to restore it. But this is only if you have some experience in this area, the device is relatively new, and you suspect that the fault is the wear and tear of contacts. Otherwise, it is better to replace the lock assembly. Fortunately it is not so expensive - no more than a thousand rubles, and this procedure will not take much time.

Which lock to choose

When you are going to replace the ignition, do not be lazy to choose it correctly. The part number for the "fourteenth" is 2114-3704010. But other modifications will do, for example for the ninth model of Samara - 2109-3704010 or for VAZ-2110 - 2110-3704005. In principle, they are all interchangeable, it is important only that the device has good quality and could serve as long as possible.

Remove the ignition switch

Before you change the ignition switch to VAZ-2114, make sure that you have the tools you need. You will need:

  • A screwdriver with a cross-shaped bit;
  • A wrench for "10";
  • A small hammer;
  • Sharp chisel;
  • Pliers.

And now we'll figure out how to remove the ignition key on the VAZ-2114. The procedure is as follows:

  1. We de-energize the on-board network by removing the "negative" terminal from the battery (for this purpose release the bolt on the terminal with the "10" key).
  2. Remove the plastic cover of the steering column by removing the three screws securing it.
  3. For convenience, you can also dismantle the steering wheel with switches, but you can do without it.
  4. Disconnect the emergency stop button wiring harness.
  5. We disconnect a block of the lock of ignition.
  6. Inspect the bolts securing the lock. If you are replacing the lock for the first time, you may be surprised, because they do not have heads. This is such a peculiar standard anti-theft concept.
  7. Using a chisel and a hammer, loosen these bolts and twist them with pliers.
  8. Remove the lock bracket.
  9. We dismantle the device.

Installation and connection of the ignition lock VAZ -2114

The algorithm for installing the lock and its connection to the on-board network is as follows:

  1. We insert the key into the borehole and rotate it to the first position. So we hide the rod blocking the steering shaft.
  2. We install a new lock on the column, putting on the bracket.
  3. We tighten bolts of fastening of the lock, but not up to the end. You may need to adjust the position of the device.
  4. Check the operation of the locking device. To do this, pull out the key from the "larva", twitching it to the sides. The wheel must be locked. If there is no lock, adjust the position of the lock relative to the steering shaft. The rod should easily fit into the groove on the steering shaft.
  5. After that, insert the key, turn it to the first position. The steering wheel must be unlocked. The check is made several times, making sure that the device is working properly.
  6. Now you can tighten the bolts securing the lock. Twist until their heads fall off.
  7. We connect a block of a plait of wires of the lock of ignition.
  8. We connect wires of the button of the alarm system.
  9. Connect the "negative" terminal to the battery. We check the operation of the device in all possible modes.
  10. Install the plastic cover on the steering column.

Replacement of the contact group

If you still decide to save and do not buy the whole lock, the best solution for the working "larva" will be the replacement of the contact group. It is produced as follows:

  1. Having dismantled the ignition lock, from the end of its case we remove a lock ring, which holds the core of the device.
  2. We remove the contact group from the case.
  3. We install a new part in place of the old one. In this case, the position of the contacts "15" and "30" should correspond to the position of the rod locking the steering shaft.
  4. Note that the wide protrusion of the contact group is inserted into the wide groove on the body.
  5. Install and check the device in the order described above.
