Diseases of gladioli (signs and methods of treatment)

Throughout the growing season, garden flowers are susceptible to various diseases. So, gladioli diseases can occur from spring to autumn. How to determine the type of lesion and choose the method of its treatment? The most famous diseases of gladioli are botrytitis, dry rot, septoria, fusariosis, penicillium rot, mosaic, scab, gladiolus thrips. Below are the signs of the diseases of this plant and the methods of their treatment.

Gladiolus diseases can affect all parts of this flower. They can appear on corms, stems, leaves and flowers. So, fusariosis first affects tubers and corms. They appear darkened areas. With a longitudinal section, you can see black sosudiki. Affected bulbs germinate badly. In such plants the leaves turn yellow, and the roots die. It is best to burn plants affected by fusariosis.

Such diseases of gladioli, such as septoriosis, dry and penicillium rot, botrytitis, also affect all their parts. On the leaves there are spots of different sizes and shades. Symptoms of the disease are visible on corms. All fungal lesions most often occur in rainy weather or when the planting is too thick. Illnesses of gladioli can appear and at abusing organic and nitrogen fertilizers, and also at wrong drying of bulbs after their digging out. Often they are transmitted through contaminated soil. Diseases gladioli, whose treatment is justified only with minor lesions, are very contagious. The treatment of plants begins with the spraying of flowers with 0.5% copper chloride and a copper-soap preparation (200 g of laundry soap and 2 g of copper sulfate are taken for 10 liters of water ) throughout the growing season. The planting material is treated with 0.2% base. Vaults and containers in which corms are stored are treated with 4% formalin and 5% copper sulfate. Plants with significant lesions must be excavated and burned.

There are less well-known diseases of gladioli. Treatment (photo on the right) of a plant affected by a mosaic does not give any result. This viral disease is caused by cucumber or bean mosaic. At the same time, the leaflets show light green stripes and spots of different sizes. The flowers of the gladiolus show a variegation. Diseased plants must be excavated and burned.

Gladiolus parsley is caused by bacteria that infect corms. They appear dark, depressed inward sores with a shiny surface. Control measures for this disease are the same as in the case of septoriosis and rot.

Gladiolus diseases are not always provoked by viruses and bacteria. Very often this flower is affected by small insects of dark brown color. They are called gladiolus thrips. If the temperature of the corms is higher than 10 ° C, they can be affected by these insects. From their bites, corms acquire a burn, rough surface. During the vegetation period, thrips accumulate on the flower arrow. So they damage the flowers. The main sign of the appearance of thrips is the twisting of the buds. Methods of struggle: before planting corms are etched with 0.2% baseol, mixed with 0.2% carbophos. Throughout the growing season (especially during the flowering period), regular processing of plants with 0.2% carbophos is carried out. Periodicity of spraying - every 10-14 days.
