Chekhov Theater (Taganrog): history, repertoire, troupe

The Chekhov Theater (Taganrog) exists since the 19th century. Its repertoire is diverse and designed for different age categories of viewers. The theater is headed by Sergey Davidovich Gert, Honored Artist of Russia.

History of the theater

Theater Chekhov (Taganrog) began its existence in 1827. It was then that the first troupe of drama actors appeared in the city. It was a serf theater. It was located in the annexe of the house of the merchant Karajani. In 1828, 13 serf musicians were bought for the theater. The first troupe of the Taganrog Theater existed for 20 years. Artists played performances not only in their city, but also went on tour. The repertoire included vaudevilles, comedies, as well as performances based on plays by NV Gogol and V. Shakespeare.

In 1845, the city authorities appealed to the government with a request that they be given money to build a building for the theater. But this did not happen. The theater was built, but the money was collected by the townspeople. In November 1866 the first performance took place. For 20 years there were two troupes in the theater. One - opera, in which artists from Italy worked. The second is a dramatic one, in which actors from Russia served. The Italian troupe consisted of 100 artists. In the Russian there were 20 actors. Opera performances among the townspeople were more popular than dramatic ones.

In the 70 years of the 19th century the picture changed. The drama troupe has doubled in the number of artists, and its popularity with the viewer has increased. After the revolution, Chekhov Theater (Taganrog) experienced a stagnant period in creativity. In 1941 the city was occupied by the Germans. Actors who were of Jewish origin, the Nazis shot. Many artists went to the front. In 1943, when the city was liberated from the invaders, the troupe was no more. The theater performed guest performances. The new troupe appeared in 1945. The eighties and nineties were the heyday of the theater.

Today the troupe actively tours and takes part in festivals.
