In the 16th century, on the site of a modern cemetery was located the village of Pokrovskoye, which is owned by the Novospassky Monastery. In the first half of the seventeenth century, a wooden church of the Intercession of the Virgin was built on the monastery land. A hundred years later the temple was rebuilt in stone. Officially Pokrovskoe cemetery was opened at the church only in 1858. According to some historical sources, the first burials in this area appeared much earlier. Historical gravestones and rich crypts on the territory of the cemetery did not survive. The thing is that in the XIX century, mostly peasants were buried here.
