Cologne Cathedral in Germany - an object of the world cultural heritage of UNESCO

The place chosen for the construction of the cathedral is not accidental. It has long been a religious center for local Christians. Cologne Cathedral in Germany, built in the Gothic style, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was erected on the site of several generations of churches.

The construction of the cathedral lasted almost two hundred years. Of course, today, such a huge time for construction will surprise many, but if you imagine, when it was and that there was no construction equipment in those days and times, it becomes clear why the 157-meter building was built for so long.

Cologne Cathedral. Architecture and history

The idea of building a cathedral arose long before the beginning of its construction. In 1164, the Emperor Frederick I of Barbarossa, in honor of the conquest of the Italian city of Milan, presented the remains of the Three Kings and the Holy Magi, hitherto preserved in Milan, to Archbishop Cologne Reinald von Dassel. First, for these holy relics, within a decade, sarcophagi were created from precious metals and semi-precious stones. However, for their storage, this was not enough. It was necessary to build a church church.

But the Cologne Cathedral in Germany did not hurry to build. Only 84 years after the acquisition of relics was laid the first stone in the foundation of the temple. This happened in 1248, and the founder was the archbishop of Cologne, Konrad von Gokhtaden. It was from this moment that a huge team of builders from all over Europe began to build the Cologne Cathedral. In Germany, this city, among other things, had the most important political significance and was considered one of the most powerful. Therefore, the presence of its own cathedral for the city was not a simple whim, but a necessity.

The goal of the architect Gerhard von Rile was to become famous throughout the world and stay in the memory of generations, having built a truly grandiose cathedral, which by its size and originality would overshadow all already existing Christian churches. Nevertheless, some French cathedrals were taken as architect for example. The peculiarity of these temples were high vaults, pilasters, arches, pointed in the middle and ascending skyward. This ensured the penetration of light into the interior and created a special atmosphere within the church. When the building of the church was nearing its end, the architect Rilea had long since disappeared, but he certainly would have been proud of his brainchild.

Cologne Cathedral in Germany has a truly majestic view. Especially beautiful interior decoration. Outside, the church is a two-headed giant, its sharp spiers pointing to the sky, closer to God. Nearby is the majestic Rhine.

Even after the opening of the temple doors, the construction of it continued for several centuries. Cologne wanted to perfect their pride - the Cologne Cathedral. The photos in the article show the greatness of the building of the temple and the most important relics, which after the construction was placed inside the cathedral. They also glorified this glorious German city in the whole Christian world.
