We make chippers with our own hands

When caring for their site owners constantly face the problem of recycling branches and other waste that are necessarily collected after cleaning the garden and the garden. They need to either be taken out or burned. Otherwise in the courtyard in a short time there will be bulky piles of garbage. Another option is a garden chopper that will chop such waste into small pieces. It can be purchased at the store. But it's expensive. Even second-hand will cost about 50 thousand rubles. Therefore, it is much cheaper to assemble a chopper cutter with your own hands.

Principle of operation

To understand how the chopper works, you need to consider what it consists of. The device is shown in the drawing below.

The basis is a chip-grinding mechanism. It consists of a chipping disk on which radial knives are located. There is also a rotor with blades and hammers. The disk rotates due to the connection with the shaft, which in turn is installed in the roller bearings. Through the receiving bin, the wood gets to the knives. The cut pieces fall down to the hammers, which even larger crush the chips. Due to rotation, centrifugal force is formed. Under its influence, the chips fall on the screen and are removed through the discharge opening.

The available drawings are different in some details. But the schematic diagram does not change. Since the parts may differ, the dimensions of some of them need to be adjusted during assembly.

Preparation of the basis

Manufacture of a chipper with their own hands begins with the preparation of a metal disk (1.6-2.0 cm thick and 35-40 cm in diameter). It will be a flywheel. And at the same time, knives will be fixed on it. In the center of the disk make a hole for the key. There should be symmetrical cuts along the perimeter, along which chips will be removed.

On one side of the disk are attached knives. To do this, holes are prepared, into which bolts with countersunk heads are inserted. It is advisable to take the bolts under the hexagon. They keep the design better.

On the reverse side of the disk, cross strips are welded. During the rotation, they will eject the chips.

Frame

The second stage of making a chipper with your own hands is the preparation of the frame. To do this, use a metal sheet thickness of 3-5 mm. They cut out two details, reminiscent of the union of a circle and a square. And the diameter of the circle should be 3-5 cm more than the diameter of the blade with knives.

A metal curved strip is welded to the bottom plate, which will serve as a sidewall. On the inside, observing the gaps between the body and the disk, kegs are welded (pieces of rod). Carving is made in barrels. In them the fastening of the lid will then twist. In the lid make fasteners, disposed similarly to the kegs. A hole is also made for the shaft, on which a blade with knives will be fixed.

In the lid a window is cut out, where branches will be laid. It must be made at an angle so that the wood does not fly back.

Frame

The frame of the home-made chipper is made of a metal profile (or corner) with a side not less than 5 cm. It is assembled according to the drawing shown in the figure above.

To install the engine is a folding platform. For this, a metal sheet 2 cm thick is used.

Assembling the unit

To build a chipper with your own hands you still need hammers. They should be the same. And for their manufacture take metal plates 0.5 cm thick. The screen is made in the form of a metal cylinder with a diameter of up to 35 cm. To do this, a sheet of metal about 100-110 cm long is bent, and holes with a diameter of 1, 0-1.2 cm.

Rotating elements must be covered with a protective cover. For him, take a metal thickness of 0.8-1.2 cm. As the stiffeners set metal corners.

On the frame is installed the lower part of the casing and the shaft assembly. Check that the shaft does not touch the frame during rotation. If there are no touches, the upper part of the casing is closed. If there is no friction when the friction rotates, you can install the motor and put on the belts. Adjusting the tension of the belts, check the operation of the unit at idle. Vibration should not be. If there are no extraneous noises, no vibrations and no tapping, then the assembled chipper is ready, and it can be used for its intended purpose.
