Irkutsk is one of the most important cultural centers of Siberia, where theatrical traditions are strong. History (until the 1990s)

So there were circumstances that immediately after the founding of the Irkutsk Musical Theater (BMI), his actors had to go with the concerts to the hospitals and military units, as the war began. These years were marked by the creation of an anti-fascist satirical play "Under the sky of Prague", whose authors were composer S. Zaslavsky and playwright P. Malyarevsky. Along with local actors in the theater in the years of the Second World War, active participation was given by artists of the Kiev Opera House and other creative workers from different cities of the country who were evacuated to Irkutsk.

In the first post-war decade in the BMI began to put mostly classics, including works by such masters of the operetta as I. Strauss, I. Kalman, F. Lehar, J. Offenbach.

The repertoire of the theater in those years was supplemented by several interesting children's productions ("Bremen Musicians", "Mukha-tsokotukha", etc.).

In 2001 the Musical Theater (Irkutsk) celebrated its 60th anniversary, and in honor of this event it was named after N. Zagursky.
