About the theater

Theater "Behind the Black River" officially opened in 1983. Before that, its founder, Oleg Mendelson, assembled a troupe of amateurs in the Yusupov Palace. But there he was cramped, and the performances were very rare - once a week.

The director and his actors changed their habitat. They in 1980 moved to the village Kolomyaga. There the troupe worked for three years unofficially, and in 1983 the theater "Behind the Black River" was officially opened.

For 10 years of existence the collective has put more than twenty performances. In the repertoire were adults and children's plays, and classics, and works of contemporary authors.

After 11 years - in 1994 - the theater received the status of a professional and a new building. The troupe moved to Bogatyrsky Avenue, where it lives to this day.

The auditorium of the theater is small, designed for 80 seats.

The troupe works not only on its site, very often the artists show their performances at the leading stages of the city of St. Petersburg. And also the actors actively go on tour. In 2011, the life of the theater "Behind the Black River" was a tragic event - a great loss. Oleg Mendelson, the founder, director and director, passed away. The troupe now lives by trying to do everything so that Oleg Yurevich's ideas are not gone into oblivion, but are realized. In these few years, several new plays have been staged without O. Mendelson.

Three years ago, in 2013, the theater celebrated its thirtieth anniversary. By this date the collective has come full of creative energy and with the desire not to stop at what has been achieved, not to stand still, but to develop. Here we are searching for new genres, plays, authors. The theater is looking for new forms of communication with the audience, which will be consonant with the time and will allow talking with the current audience in a language understandable to it, touching the soul, stirring up feelings, but at the same time the troupe tries to remain faithful to the traditions of the Russian drama school and continues to talk with the public on eternal topics.

In the season 2014-2015, the theater "Behind the Black River" presented to the audience several premier performances: "The story of the panda bears told by a saxophonist who has a girlfriend in Frankfurt", "My Friend Carlson", "Love Letters", "Small Marital Offenses" , "Two".

In the current season (2015-2016) four more premieres were held in the theater, two of which are intended for the children's audience. These are the performances: "Teach me to fly", "The Witch from the cupboard", "Small marital crimes" and "The story of one night".

Founder

Oleg Mendelson created the theater "Behind the Black River". The director was born in 1946 in Leningrad. From childhood, he studied at the theater studio at the Palace of Pioneers. Oleg Yurievich Mendelson was the permanent director and artistic director of the troupe until his death. He died in May 2011.
