The syntactic role of parts of speech
The sentence is one of the basic units of syntax. It is a complete thought and can consist of one or more words. From the grammatical point of view, the sentence has members - the main (subject and predicate), as well as minor (these are definitions, additions, circumstances). What is the syntactic role of this or that part of speech in the sentence? We will try to understand this issue below: we will only consider independent parts of speech.
The syntactic role of the noun
As a rule, the noun serves as the main member of the sentence or addition. But the peculiarity of this part of speech is that it can become any member of the sentence. In their main role, nouns can be determined, for example, by adjectives, pronouns, participles, ordinal numbers with matching in categories such as gender, number and case. Also a noun can constitute syntactic constructions with verbs, adverbs and predicative words.
Syntactic role adjective
The most frequent role of the adjective in the sentence is an agreed definition, but it is not the only one. The adjective can also act as a subject or nominal part of a compound predicate. For adjectives in a brief form it is characteristic to act only as a predicate.
The syntactic role of the adverb
The usual role of the adverb is the circumstance - the mode of action, time, place, cause, purpose, measure and degree. However, sometimes it can be a predicate. There is also a separate group of adverbs, which in the sentence play the role of union words.
The verb usually acts as a predicate. The infinitive (if you do not remember - this is an indefinite form of the verb) can also be part of a compound predicate, or be a subject, addition, definition, circumstance.
The syntactic role of the sacrament
Communion has the same grammatical properties as the adjective, so the sentence often acts as an agreed definition. However, his kinship with the verb also allows the participle in some cases to be a nominal part of the compound predicate, but this is characteristic only of short forms. In addition, the participle with dependent words forms the so-called participial turnover, which, being an indivisible structure, can be practically any secondary member.
The syntactic role of gerunds
The gerundive in the sentence is only a circumstance. However, as part of the gerundive turnover, it can become another secondary member of the proposal, but it is important to remember that the turnover is treated as a single whole.
The syntactic role of the pronoun
The role of the pronoun depends directly on which category it belongs to. Since the variety of pronouns gives them ample opportunities, they can act as a subject, predicate, definition and complement - depending on the context.
The syntactic role of numerals
Numbers in a sentence can be either subject and predicate, or a definition or circumstance of time. As you can see, nothing complicated.
