Notebook Asus N53S: reviews, details

If you believe the company "Asus", then after the purchase of the model N53 you will get exceptional opportunities for work and entertainment. The characteristics of the laptop confirm the brand statement: a quad-core processor from Intel in the face of Core i7, a GT 540M graphics card from Optimus from Nvidia with DirectX 11 support and ICEpower acoustics with the Bang & Olufsen system.

The subject of today's review is the laptop Asus N53S - the representative of the new middle-class laptops. Let's try to figure out what are the real features of this attractive both for the price and the technical characteristics of the device, and also consider the advantages of the new Intel processors - Sandy Bridge.

In general, the Asus N53S is an elegant and compact 15-inch laptop with a 4-core processor and built-in HD Graphics 3000 video card, which works in conjunction with a new and powerful Nvidia GT 540 card.

Housing

The exterior of the case is very similar to the previous N53J, with the same chassis with the original transition to the cover through the hinges. The design of the device is similar to the models N73 - with wave-like transitions of the side edges to the cover, together with stylish speaker grids. The model looks very, very interesting, especially since the company has not really pleased its consumer with a really beautiful design for a long time.

The next feature of the Asus N53S is the material from which it is made. In the screen frame and in the palmrest, engineers decided to use aluminum inserts. A slightly textured and slightly polished surface is pleasant to look at and touch. All the plastic components of the hull are made with obvious love and quality, due to what the strength of the structure has increased significantly.

The matte finish of the model virtually eliminates the appearance of fingerprints, dust and other dirt, allowing you to maintain an excellent appearance for a long time. Even with a careful examination, it is not possible to detect any blemishes or gaps on the hull.

The Asus N53S cover does not allow the body to open more than 130 degrees, but this does not interfere with comfortable operation even on the go. Users are extremely positive about the sturdy loops of the model, which allows you to clearly hold the display, regardless of the degree to which it is thrown away.

Well that "Asus" took the rule not to create problems where they should not be. Therefore, to get to the internal components of the device, it is enough to unscrew only two screws - and you will be able to access a hard disk with slats of RAM.

Interfaces Asus N53S

The characteristics of the model allowed the laptop to acquire an optimal set of ports and communications, and the only thing that causes some discomfort when working with the device - this is not their best location. The majority of the ports for connecting the periphery are in the front of the side faces of the housing. On the rear panel, there is only space left for the VGA output and the power cable.

If you use the device as a stationary device by connecting a mouse, printer, external hard drive, power cord, etc. to it, the entire workspace, both on the left and on the right, will be cluttered with a bunch of wires and cables. And if left-handers have to put up with HDMI and the Internet port on the right side, then for right-handers, working with the device is more or less convenient because of the location of USB-interfaces.

Multimedia connoisseurs probably will be pleased with the universal SPDIF output for external devices that are equipped with a laptop Asus N53S. The characteristics of the model allow working with USB devices of both old type 2.0 and new 3.0. Some users in their reviews note as a lack of lack of an interface for ExpressCard, but then you would have to remove one USB port, so this is a "double-edged sword".

Networks and wireless communications

To connect to Wi-Fi networks, the Asus N53S uses the Atheros AR9002WB-1N module, and for wired communications an adapter is provided from the Realtek series RTL8168 / 8111 PCI-E. The modules allow the transfer of all data at the highest possible speed, provided that the relevant technical conditions are met.

As an alternative to wireless communication, you can use the fourth-generation Bluetooth module. Asus does not plan to integrate UMTS into its models yet, so you can use a standard USB-modem to work with such networks.

Input Devices

The Asus N53S has an additional keypad built into the wider 17-inch laptops. The difference between input devices and the latter is only in the layout of the main keyboard - the distance between the keys is slightly smaller than that of the 17-inch.

Strangely enough for "Asus", but the keyboard is not quite convenient for long-lasting printing - the buttons are too soft and fuzzy. Pressing the key is almost not felt, and the buttons are too close for quick typing. But many users, judging by the reviews, are ready to close their eyes to these shortcomings. The main thing is that the 15-inch laptop has an additional digital block, and this is very pleased.

Touchpad

The touchpad is similar to the older N73 series, where all standard multi-touch protocols and gestures are supported. Working with the manipulator does not cause serious complaints, and you can easily distinguish the work surface from the rest of the case - the touchpad is slightly immersed in it.

Responsiveness and characteristics of sliding fingers can be designated as an average level. The navigation bar at the bottom does not interfere with the work and is quite convenient to use.

Display Asus N53S

The technical characteristics of the screen are familiar from the previous lines of the module Samsung SEC5441 with a standard resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels.

The maximum brightness of the screen varies between 220-240 Cd / m 2 , the black value is 1.31 Cd / m 2 with a contrast ratio of 172: 1. During games or watching movies, it is noticeable that the black color lacks saturation and clarity.

The trouble that many good laptops do not lack is a glossy screen, with the exception of the Asus N53S. User reviews are full of complaints that it is impossible to work with a laptop on the street or even in well-lit rooms. Therefore, it makes sense to protect your workplace from direct solar and neon rays.

The viewing angles are more or less tolerable. A neighbor on the left and on the right will be able to see the owner of the film or photo, but in the vertical position the picture immediately loses its saturation, turning into a hodgepodge of colors and glare.

Performance

In 15-inch laptops, such powerful 4-core processors as Sandy Bridge, are very rare, so the model pleases with its performance and smart operating system.

Here you can add quite a large amount of RAM - 8 GB, and together with a video card from the Nvidia GT 540M, we get a completely playable laptop with an acceptable FPS in modern games (40-60 fps).

Summarizing

I must admit that Asus managed to make a solid and smart multimedia notebook. The modern processor from Intel provides the laptop with a very effective performance boost, which automatically pushes many similar competitors in this price segment.

Using the Nvidia module and software "Optimus" will help you find the balance between battery saving and performance of the device.

The only thing that upsets the lineup is that it's a very mediocre display. If the screen had a greater contrast capability and a wider coverage angle, the image of an exceptionally attractive laptop could be attached to the N53S.

If to speak in general, then its price - 35 000 rubles - the laptop fully justifies, and it can be recommended to all who are eager to get themselves a portable reliable "friend".
