"The Life of Klim Samgin": a brief summary of the novel

In this article we turn to the novel "The Life of Klim Samgin." The summary of it will be our main topic. But first, let's talk a little about the structure and design of the work.

About the work

"The Life of Klim Samgin" is considered to be epic novels and is considered the greatest work of Maxim Gorky. The work consists of 4 books, which were written from 1925 to 1936 (the year of the writer's death).

The idea of the work "The Life of Klim Samgin" (a brief summary below), according to Gorky himself, is to show the hero-intellectual, which was a lot during the first revolution of 1907. These people at first warmly supported the workers and the revolutionary movement, but it gradually becomes clear that they are not on the road with the new Soviet Russia. The main goal is to show the reason for the infidelity of their positioning themselves as a superclass group.

In simple terms, Gorky portrayed an intellectual who had traveled from a revolutionary to an emigrant.

Maxim Gorky, "The Life of Klim Samgin": a summary

In Ivan Akimovich Samgin, a populist intellectual, a son was born. My father decided to give him a peasant and unusual, in his opinion, name - Clim, who immediately made the boy special among other children - Lyuba Somova, whose father was a doctor; Boris, Varvara and Lydia, offspring of Varavka lodger; Igor Turoboev, who, together with Boris, studied at a military school; Alina Telepneva and Konstantin Makarov, friends at the gymnasium; Orphan Ivan Dronov, who lived with the Samgins. Between Klim and these children a rather complex relationship develops, as the boy constantly tries to stand out, to differ from others around. Boris's main rival was Boris. Their enmity did not abate until Boris, along with Varvara, perished - the children fell through the ice when they skated.

Clim studies at the gymnasium. At this time, he first overcomes the interest in women. The mother of the boy, having noticed this, decides to bribe the seamstress Rita, so that the young man's first sexual experience is "safe". Rita agrees, although she is in love with Doronov. All this is known to Clim. This leads to the fact that the young man is disappointed in all women, even in his mother.

Makarov falls in love with Lidia, but after quarrel with the girl decides to commit suicide. Samghin manages to save a friend, which he later regrets - he liked Lida himself.

Students

I tried to depict typical for my time hero M. Gorky ("The Life of Klim Samgin"). The summary (part 1 is set out above) shows how well the writer managed to do this, despite the fact that his character constantly tried to look special.

Clim went to St. Petersburg after graduation from the gymnasium. For him, it's time for a student. Samgin had a new circle of contacts, which included: Dmitry, the elder brother of Klim, a student involved in the revolutionary struggle; Seraphim Nekhaeva, who had a weakness for everything decadent; Marina Premium; Kutuzov, a future Bolshevik and an active revolutionary, like Lenin; Vladimir Liutov, who comes from merchants, is a student; Elizabeth Spivak and her husband-musician. However, in the new company he tried to differ, exposing everything to critical analysis. For this new friends dubbed him "clever".

Lyutov falls in love with the capricious Alina Telepnev, who first agrees to become his wife, and then refuses because she fell in love with Turboeva. Here the theme of rivalry between the well-to-do peasant (Lyutov) and the impoverished aristocrat (Turboev) is vividly displayed.

Rest in the country and a failure in love

Clim lives in the country with his other Petersburg acquaintances. Quite a lot about the political and philosophical moods of the late 19 th and early 20 th century can be learned from the novel "The Life of Klim Samgin." The summary of the chapters describes the arguments of the younger generation about the West and Russia, the philosophy of the Slavophiles and Westerners. It turns out that Lyutov is a Russian anarchist. Samghin tries to take a special philosophical position in these disputes, but in the end he takes absolutely no. At the same time, Clim tries to confess to Lydia that he loves her, but is refused.

Samghin goes to Moscow. Here he meets new people, Moscow intellectuals, who differ from St. Petersburg's pronounced "Russianness". Among them: Uncle Chrysanthus, Peter Marakuev, Varvara Antipova and Semion Diomidov.

At the apartment of Liutov there is a binge, at which Yegor Ipatyevsky, a deacon-rasstriga, reads his poems about Vaska, Christ and the "indivisible ruble". Their meaning boils down to the fact that even in hatred Christ serves. Lyutov admires the verses. Clim again feels superfluous.

Nicholas I arrives, after which tragic events take place on the Khodynka Field, where many people were crushed when the coronation was celebrated. Samghin looks at the crowd and thinks about the insignificance of a person during a mass psychosis.

There is a final rupture between Clim and Lydia, after which the girl leaves for Paris. Samgin goes to an industrial exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod. Here he meets with Inokov, a kind of poet and a bright newsman.

New acquaintances

As a supporter of the revolution, Gorky places the appropriate accents in his work. "The Life of Klim Samgin" (a brief summary of the books can be found in this article) - a work about the fact that a person who does not have clear convictions and does not belong to a particular social group can not achieve anything in life.

Clim meets Tomilny, who is sure that the path to truth lies through unbelief. This Nietzschean thought turns out to be close to Samghin. The hero gets acquainted with the provincial historian Kozlov, monarchist and guardian, who denies both the revolution and the revolutionary spirit.

Samghin meets Kutuzov, who is as self-assured as Kozlov, although he adheres to opposite views. Kutuzov says that the intelligentsia is "revolutionaries from boredom". At home, Klim is searched, after which the hero talks with Popov, the gendarme captain. The military gives him to understand that Clim will never become a revolutionary.

First arrest and Moscow unrest

The events of the novel "The Life of Klim Samgin" (brief content) are again being transferred to Moscow. Here, Klim actively communicates with the leaders of the liberal intelligentsia - Tagilsky and Preis. Comes Kutuzov, next to which Samghin understands that the real revolution is getting ready aside from him and his closest intellectual circle. Makarov talks about the philosophical teachings of NF. Fedorov and the place of women in history.

Vyborg dies Ivan Akimovich, the father of Klim. Samghin goes to the funeral and meets his brother. Somov and Klim are arrested. After questioning in the police, Samghin is offered to become an informant. Clim refuses, but he has the thought that he did wrong. Samgin and Varvara Antipova have an affair, after which the girl has to have an abortion.

Student unrest begins in Moscow. Samghin is in the crowd near the Manezh, he is afraid. He is rescued by the police agent Mitrofanov. Clim goes to the village, where he witnesses peasant plunder. The hero appears fear of the peasants.

The unrest in Moscow continues. Clim enters into an affair with Nikonova, who turns out to be an informant to the police.

The Revolution of 1905

Seriously changed the Bloody Sunday (January 9, 1905) the life of Klim Samgin. The summary of the chapters tells us that Samghin begins to mentally support the revolutionary movement. Clim is in prison, he is suspected of revolutionary activity.

The 1905 revolution begins. Samghin is in Moscow. Here Somova begins the organization of sanitary points, where it would be possible to help the wounded. Clim happily supported Kutuzov and the revolution - "let everything fly to hell." However, he understands that what is happening affects his interests. He is killed by Turoboev. Makarov recognizes the spiritual crisis of the intelligentsia. Turoboev's funeral takes place. Samghin, Alina Telepneva, Lyutov and Makarov are in a dangerous situation, from which they are rescued by a thief Sasha Sudakov and the Black Hundreds.

Rus'gorod

A description begins of the revolutionary events in the novel The Life of Klim Samgin. A brief summary depicts Klim, who found himself in the very midst of combat events - at the barricades. The revolutionary crowd leads Comrade Yakov. In the eyes of the hero there is the execution of the detective Mitrofanov. Then he sees the death of Anfimovna. Clim with horror realizes that he has become an unwitting hostage to the events around him.

Klimov goes to Rusgorod on behalf of Kutuzov - you need to collect money for the Bolsheviks. On the train he talks with a tipsy lieutenant, telling how terrible it is to shoot people on orders.

Clim meets Marina Zotova, a rather wealthy woman who treats herself to people with a popular way of thinking. She believes that the reason for the revolution is that the intelligentsia does not know the people and has never known it. Here, in the company of Marina's acquaintances, Samghin finally becomes convinced that he is far from the "people's element" and is divorced from it. Clim becomes witness to the brutal murder of the governor.

Lydia comes back from abroad, Samghin is finally disappointed in her.

Abroad

To a perfectly logical result brings his hero M. Gorky. The life of Klim Samgin (a summary of this confirms) is already going on abroad. First he goes to Berlin, where he is overcome by boredom. Then Clim meets in Switzerland with his mother, but realizes that they have become completely strangers. Samghin remains completely alone. The news comes from Geneva - Liutov committed suicide.

In Paris, Clim meets with Marina Zotova. Berdnikov and Popov suggest that Samghin become a secret agent for a woman, promising a good payment, but the hero refuses.

Return

Absolutely incomprehensible and superfluous person is represented by Gorky. "The Life of Klim Samgin," a brief summary is the proof, is a description of the tragedy that befell the intelligentsia during the revolution.

Clim, realizing that his loneliness abroad has only increased, is returning to Russia. They kill Marina Zotov. In her murder, Bezbedova is suspected, who is killed in prison before the trial begins.

Varvara is dying. In Moscow, Samghin is trying to organize a liberal-independent newspaper. The news of LN's death comes. Tolstoy, which excites and frightens everyone around.

World War I

The "Life of Klim Samgin" comes to an end (a summary is given in parts above). The First World War flares up, which in the novel symbolizes the destruction of the collective mind. Samghin goes to Borovichi to the front. There he got acquainted with Lieutenant Petrov, who is an example of the disintegration of military officers. The moral fall of the army is also confirmed by the episode of the murder of Taghilsky by an angry officer.

Clim returns from the front. Here he gets to the evening for Leonid Andreev, who says that people will become one only when they realize that they are alone in the universe.

Begins in 1917, and with it the February Revolution. The fate of the main character remains unclear, since the novel has an open ending. Most likely this is due to the premature death of Gorky himself, who never managed to finish the most voluminous thing in his life.

Thus ends the novel-epic "Life of Klim Samgin" (summary). "Brifly" - a resource on which you can read the whole work.
