The drug "Streptomycin" is an antibiotic. The drug has a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activity. Less activity is observed in relation to pneumococci, streptococci. The agent is resistant to anaerobes, viruses, rickettsia.

The drug has a bactericidal effect. The mechanism of action is based on the ability to suppress protein synthesis in the cell of the pathogen. There is a poor absorption of the drug when taken orally, with intramuscular effect, absorption is better. After an hour or two after ingestion, the drug reaches its maximum concentration. Excretion mainly through the kidneys. Tablets "Streptomycin" are not produced. The medication is released in forms intended for intramuscular, intracavernous, intratracheal administration, and also in the form of an aerosol.

Indications

The drug is recommended for use in the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis . The medication is also indicated in the purulent inflammatory processes of different localization, provoked by the activity of gram-negative, gram-positive, microbes sensitive to the active substance. In particular, the drug is prescribed in combination with drugs:

  • "Levomycetin" - with pneumonia due to Klebsiella;
  • "Tetracycline" - with tularemia and plague;
  • With other antibiotics - with brucellosis and endocarditis.

Dosing regimen

Intramuscularly, the drug "Streptomycin" instructions for use recommends the use of 0.5-1 grams, but a day should not be more than 2 grams. At a weight of less than fifty kilograms and at the age of 60 years, administer 0.75 mg per day. For children, the dosage is 15-20 mg / kg, but not more than 0.5-1 g per day. When tuberculosis is administered once. In case of poor tolerance, the drug is divided into two doses. The duration of therapy is determined by the patient's condition and the course of the pathology. Treatment can last more than three months.
