In museums there are expositions of thousands of masterpieces of world art. In addition, the building-branches themselves are extremely picturesque and represent a great historical and artistic value.

One of the famous architectural creations is the masterpiece Stroganov Palace, built by the architect Rastrelli.

Let's go back to the past, or how the Stroganovs settled in Peterhof

The basis of the millionth state of the name was laid in the fifteenth century by the enterprising and intelligent Anika Fedorovich Stroganov. He engaged in salt and fur trade, trade. In 1558 the family received a letter from John IV for possession of huge land lots in the Urals. Along the rivers Kama and Chusovaya Stroganov built whole cities. They advanced deep into Siberia, reclaiming all new lands. They also equipped Ermak's campaign.

In their activities the Stroganovs always remained faithful to the crown, for which they were awarded the title of "eminent people." They were allowed to arm and have a squad, only the king had the right to judge them. In the 18th century metallurgy was added to all industries. In 1722 the Stroganoffs became barons, in 1761 a count's title was granted to them.

Leading the life of aristocrats and being close to the court, the family settled in Petersburg. The wealthy nobles at the tailor Johann Neumann bought a site on Nevsky Prospekt. The Stroganov brothers laid eyes on the neighboring section of the imperial chef Shestakov. The latter, after long and persistent persuasions, had to give them his plot.

At the end of 1752 the Stroganov Palace was laid in St. Petersburg. For its erection, the royal family of the Romanovs, by way of exception, permitted the involvement of the court architect Rastrelli. In his practice, this was the first private order. Large-scale work was completed in 1754. The senior Stroganov, Sergei Grigorievich, was delighted with the new palace and generously paid for Rastrelli's work. The housewarming party was marked by a magnificent costume ball, which the Empress Elizabeth Petrovna paid attention to.

Description of the palace

The Stroganov Palace in St. Petersburg is built by the architect Rastrelli in L-shaped form, has 50 rooms, a large five-window dance hall with an area of 128 square meters. Meters and the lobby is richly decorated with mirrors and sculptures. A large grand staircase with gilded railing, decorated with marble decor, is a real work of art.

Both facades overlooking the Moika River and the Neva River are decorated in a highly pathetic and solemn manner. From the high ground floor up slender columns rise, uniting the next two floors. Sculptures in Italian style, exquisite stucco, portrait medallions adorn the building. The main facade on Nevsky Prospekt is decorated with the Stroganoff emblem.

Visitors were struck by the luxurious interior of the house - majestic sculptures, elegant decor, expensive furniture, gold, marble, chandeliers of the famous masters, paintings of great artists.

The alterations of the building to the taste of the heirs of the Stroganoffs

After Rastrelli, the architect Voronikhin attached his hand to the decoration of the palace. He rebuilt the entire north-western side of the building, enclosing it in a square, changed the terracotta coloring to yellow and pink, changed the style of several interiors into a classic one.

In 1790, the palace suffered a severe fire, destroying everything, except the dance hall and partially the vestibule. The Stroganovs restored the interiors of the rooms, and the palace again shone with magnificence.

In total, more than 10 eminent architects worked on the Stroganov Palace. Something was being completed, the style of interiors and the coloring of the facades changed: the palace after Voronikhin was repainted in a light lilac, then in brick red, and later in light green. Now the palace has a pink tinge. Nevertheless, the exterior of the building completely retained its original appearance according to Rastrelli's plan.

The architectural history of the Stroganov Palace is so rich and multifaceted that special albums with detailed descriptions of the famous sights of St. Petersburg are published. Photos with names illustrate all the stages of construction and alteration of the building.

Life in the palace until 1917
