The building of the theater was built by the architect Antonio Rinaldi. In the 19th century, it underwent a reconstruction. The capital reconstruction of the Mariinsky was completed by the architect and draftsman Tom de Tomon. In 1818 the theater was seriously damaged by the fire and was subjected to a new reconstruction.

On his stage there were three troupes: Russian, Italian and French.

In 1936 the auditorium was rebuilt in order to achieve better acoustics and review. In 1859, the building burned down, and in its place was built a new one, in which the academic Mariinsky Theater is still located. The project was developed by Alberto Cavos. The name of the theater was in honor of the Empress Maria - the wife of Alexander II.

In 1869 the ballet troupe was led by the great Marius Petipa.

In 1885 the theater had to go through another reconstruction. To the left wing of the building was made a three-story extension, which housed workshops, rehearsal rooms, boiler room and power plant. In another 10 years the foyer was expanded and the main façade was rebuilt.

In 1917, the Mariinsky Theater received the status of the state, in 1920 - the academic theater, and in 1935 he was given the name of SM Kirov.

In those years in the repertoire of classical works were operas and ballets of Soviet composers.

In the postwar years the theater gave the audience such performances: "The Legend of Love", "Spartacus", "Stone Flower", "Twelve", "Leningrad Symphony". In addition to J. Verdi, P.I. Tchaikovsky, J. Bizet, M. Mussorgsky, N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov in the repertoire appeared works of such composers as Dmitry Shostakovich, Sergei Prokofiev, Tikhon Khrennikov and so on.

In 1968-1970 the theater was again reconstructed. The project of the renovated building was designed by the architect Salome Gelfer. After this reconstruction, the theater became as we see it now.

In the 80 years a new generation of opera artists came to the Mariinsky Theater. They brightly declared themselves in the productions "The Queen of Spades" and "Eugene Onegin". The director of these performances was Yury Temirkanov.

In 1988 Valery Gergiev was appointed as the main conductor , and soon he became artistic director. Thanks to his efforts in 1992, the theater again became known as the Mariinsky Theater.

Several years ago, the Mariinsky-2 was opened. The technical equipment of his stage allows creating modern innovative performances, which you could only dream of earlier.
