SHRUS external: device, purpose and principle of operation

The joint of equal angular velocities (SHRUS) is a device that provides the transmission of torque from the transmission to the driving semi-axles of the vehicle. It is manned in pairs, on one of the axles of the car. What is the outer joint joint and how it works? You will learn in today's article.

Appointment

The outer SHRUS (VAZ 2115 including) is a part of the independent suspension. Those wheels that do not transmit torque, i.e. They are not leading, they are not equipped with these hinges. One of the main features of this mechanism is its ability to provide an angle of inclination up to 70 degrees, which makes it possible to use it in the construction of the leading axis.

Where is it located?

As a rule, most of modern cars are equipped with hinges on the front axle, as their running system is basically front-wheel drive. On all-wheel drive vehicles, the CV joint is equipped with both axles, as all 4 wheels provide the drive and movement of the car. Accordingly, on the rear-wheel drive this device is placed on the rear axle. However, in the last two cases the SHRUS can be placed only under the condition that an independent suspension is used in the car and that this wheel has an unsynchronized possibility of movement in the vertical and horizontal planes.

When the angle of the joint is small, with the transmission of effort from the transmission, the cardan joint of unequal speeds can easily handle. When this value of the angle increases, the shaft starts to rotate unevenly, which complicates the work of torque transmission. As a result, the car loses power and becomes less dynamic. To prevent this from happening, a SHRUS (external and internal) is installed on the machine.

What is the difference between the inner hinge and the outer hinge?

Most often in the gearbox front-wheel drive cars are used two types of CV joints - external and internal. This is done in order to ensure greater freedom of movement of the shaft. And if their principle of operation and purpose - transfer of effort from the transmission to the driving wheels - are unchanged, then in the design, there are two main differences.

  • SHRUS external is installed directly at the wheel itself and equipped with a ball joint on the end of the drive shaft.
  • The internal interface with the transmission housing and is equipped with a tripod joint on the same place.

Life time

SHRUS external, however, as well as internal, is the most "tenacious" detail of all that is in the suspension. Due to their simple, and at the same time reliable, design, their service life can reach 100, 150, and in some cases even 200 thousand kilometers. However, do not forget that the "survivability" of this mechanism directly depends on the condition and timely replacement of anthers.

SHRUS outer - price

The cost of this device on the Russian market is on average from 500 to 2-3 thousand rubles. The price can be changed to a greater or lesser extent, depending on which car this or that CV joint is used for.
