Sampo - mountain in Karelia

Mount Sampo (Karelia) is mentioned in the world-famous epic "Kalevala". But does it have anything in common with the geographical location on the map of Russia? This we have to find out. But in any case this place is worth a visit.

Wonderful Karelian nature, ultramarine smoothness of the Koncheozero, which stretches for thirty kilometers, all this attracts tourists. Moreover, this sight is located not so far from Petrozavodsk, in some forty kilometers. To Sampo come as part of the groups to the paleovolcano Girvas and to the Marcial Waters. But apart from ordinary tourists who want to touch the enchanting nature of Karelia, hundreds, if not thousands of esotericists, aspire here. What are they looking for on this mountain? This we also consider in this article.

Sampo from the point of view of geology

We will not bore you with numerous scientific terms. Let's just say that the relief of Karelia was finally formed under the influence of numerous glaciers. The last of them went north twelve thousand years ago. The glaciers ran to ideally round shape boulders (the so-called "sheep's foreheads"), piled up rocks into low solitary hills (kams) or exposed the crystalline interior of the earth (selgas).

In a word, Sampo - gora, combined as a result of vertical movements of the earth 's crust, and also under the influence of a glacier. Here you can see the long stretches of the countryside. Numerous Karelian lakes are located in the rifts today.

The mountain is the character of "Kalevala"

Karelian-Finnish mythology represents Sampo in the form of a mill. This magic object grinded the grain, gold and salt in such quantities that it was enough for everyone to prosper together. Sampo Mill was forged by the smith Ilmarinen as a ransom for his bride, the daughter of Louhi. But I had to steal a gift. The smith in the company of the sage Väinämöinen and Lemminkäinen goes to Pohjola, lulls all its inhabitants and takes out Sampo. They try to take the mill out on the boat, but Louch overtakes them. As a result of the struggle, the mill breaks and falls into the water. That is why the Karelians consider the sea richer than land. The fragments of the mill are thrown ashore by the surf. Väinämöinen collects them, so the mountain Sampo appeared. It is endowed with magical properties, gives the earth a harvest, and nearby lakes - rich fish stocks.

Sampo - mountain on the map

But all this is a legend, nothing more. You can judge for a long time and guess where the mystical mountain lies. Many researchers, beginning with the creator of the "Kalevala" Elias Lonnrot, sought it in various parts of Karelia. There is an opinion that Sampo is in fact not a mountain, but a natural dam on a large, shallow lake. Thanks to this dam, the water does not freeze, causing the number of fish to increase several hundred times. But the Sampo - sor, which we describe, has clearly defined geographic coordinates. But does it have anything in common with mysticism?

The fact is that until the sixties of the 20th century this hill was anonymous. The name he received in connection with the creation of the Soviet-Finnish film "Sampo" based on "Kalevala." This mountain was chosen for the picturesque nature and views that open on Koncheozero. The hill turned into a set, so it began to be called - Sampo. The film was withdrawn, and the name caught on and got the official status.

For the esotericists

Despite the fact that the nameless hill became magical solely by the will of the writers, the trail of those who wish to stand on the axis of power and feel the special energy of the cosmos is not getting over it. For esotericists, Sampo gora, not so much purifying the chakra, as fulfilling the desire.

It is believed that you need to climb to the top of the hill, hang on a branch growing there a century-old pine scrap of your clothes and make a deep desire. Only that! No hard work, no need to purposefully go to the goal! Came, hung up a T-shirt and wait for your dream to come true.

By the way, the whole top of the hill represents a hard-hitting spectacle due to human laziness and superstition. The perennial pine will soon collapse under the clothes that were hung on it. But the esotericists laid a comfortable staircase with handrails, thanks to which it was much easier to climb the observation deck.

How to get to Mount Sampo

The natural landmark is thirty-seven kilometers to the north-east of Petrozavodsk. First, take the P15 motorway. Then you need to turn to the road P21. On it it is necessary to go to the village of Shuiskaya, or rather, to the road sign to the village of Kosalma. Fourteen kilometers will have to follow a narrow highway between two lakes - Uksh and Konch. There are no road signs on this stretch. But the place is easy to find, as there is a parking lot nearby with a lot of parked cars and buses. Mount Sampo, whose photo is the visiting card of the Karelian region, attracts numerous tourists and pilgrims.
